Role Description:

The Screening Removal Operator II is responsible for performing skilled tasks to support the operation and maintenance of the sewer collection and water distribution systems. Major activities include, but are not limited to route inspections, screening removal tasks, inflatable dam permit compliance inspections, confined space entry; removing screening, debris, trash, dirt, sand, grit, and large objects from pumping stations, wet wells, screen rooms, catch basins, valve vaults, manholes, sewers, meter sites, and other locations as assigned.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

- Manages Utility Operators in the operation, monitoring, performance of required preventative maintenance duties for assigned duty station(s) in the DDCS facilities.

- Performs the full range of manual and technical tasks, to support the general maintenance of the sewer collection and water distribution systems, including confined space entry.

- Performs mission critical duties of route inspections and inflatable dam permit compliance inspections.

- Performs the full scope of emergency and scheduled work, which includes screening removal tasks, cleaning of wet wells, cleaning pump station screen rooms; removing debris, trash, dirt, sand, grit, and large objects from pumping stations, wet wells, screen rooms, catch basins, valve vaults, manholes, sewers, meter sites, and other locations as assigned.

- Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment and power tools, including jet vacuum combination sewer cleaners, sump pumps, dewatering pumps, truck with mounted crane, overhead cranes, forklifts, hoists, confined space entry equipment, and trucks towing trailers with mounted equipment.

- Ensures the proper operation, collection and transport of sewage/storm water to their disposal point at Blue Plains and various storm water and combined sewer overflow outfalls along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and their tributaries.

- Sets up and maintains confined space entry and cleaning equipment within wet wells, sewers, and vaults.

- Complies with applicable safety rules and regulations relating to confined space, traffic control, etc. Ensures the proper execution of work following acceptable practices and industry standards.

- Ensures that housekeeping standards are met, and work areas are maintained in a safe, neat and orderly condition at all times.

- Confers with management and quality control personnel to resolve problems, provide feedback on system conditions, and recommend measures to improve operations.

- Records all necessary field data, prepares accurate and descriptive daily work reports, and special reports. Uses mobile computers, tablets, telephones, two-way radios, and other communication devices.

- Serves as the Confined Space Entry Entrant and/or Attendant.

- Enters work order data into Maximo.

- Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.

Required Experience:


Four (4) years of recent and relevant experience directly related to work involved with removing screening, debris, trash, dirt, sand, grit, and large objects from pumping stations, screen rooms, catch basins, valve vaults, manholes, pipes, and confined space entry within storm water, sanitary, or combined sewer systems.



Minimum Education Requirements:


High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate or equivalent

Required Licenses & Certifications:


Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s Permit, a Commercial Driver’s License Class B with air brakes, Tanker’s N endorsement.

Physical Requirements:


Exposure to indoor and/or outdoor environmental conditions that include exposure to extreme cold and or hot temperatures.


Working at construction sites, under sewers and pumping stations.


Climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) frequently



Exposure to noise and hazards


Field work to include walking, bending, and long periods of standing


Exposure to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin such as sewer or chemical fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gasses, and/or poor ventilation



Subject to on call and required overtime


Required to work shift work, holidays, and weekends in all weather conditions
