SCADA/Load Management & Field Communications Technician

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) is a progressive member owned utility with a service area that spreads from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay. REC serves over 165,000 connections in portions of 22 Virginia counties.

REC has a job opening for the position of SCADA/Load Management & Field Communications Technician in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Technician is responsible for providing and maintaining field communication systems essential to the Cooperative, which includes the installation, operation, monitoring, maintenance, programming, and repair of the SCADA system. Additionally, this role ensures the optimal functioning of the Cooperative's Load Management and AMI systems by performing similar task, installation, operation, monitoring, maintenance, programming, and repairing both systems to support their effective performance.

Role and Responsibilities

- Configure, Test, Install, upgrade, troubleshoot, and repair SCADA, AMI, and Load Management Systems in substations and other applicable locations across the service territory.

- Installation and repair of a broad range of complex field communications equipment.

- Maintain records and procedures for these systems.

- Perform routine maintenance and inspections for these systems.

- Provide support to other departments to include but not limited to: relaying, substation, apparatus, fiber, networking, and system operations.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Associates degree required in electrical/electronic technology or computer science. Six years of progressive experience directly related to field communications systems, wiring, or electrical style engineering, may substitute for degree. Participation in a State of Virginia or other accredited program related to the electric industry may be substituted for the degree requirements.

Assist with system operations and restoration efforts during major outages, and provide backup support to telecommunications technicians with microwave systems, two-way radios, towers, and other related tasks as needed. This position will also attend out-of-town seminars, assist in workshops and training sessions, and participate in the development and testing of new equipment as it relates to the Cooperative and SCADA systems. Perform other duties as assigned.

Must have the ability to configure hardware and software related to SCADA and Load Management/AMI systems. The position requires effective communication skills with the general public, as well as the ability to perform electronic repair work, including troubleshooting and replacing components as needed. The individual must be able to develop reports to analyze the effectiveness of the SCADA and Load Management Systems and must hold a valid State of Virginia driver’s license. Perform other duties as assigned.

Most of the work is performed in the Headquarters office; however, periodic field trips for the installation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment in all types of weather will be required. The position will be subject to 24-hour call to maintain all Cooperative field communication systems or to support the Cooperative load management program. Overtime may be necessary during outages, load control periods, or as workload demands. Attendance at seminars, meetings, and conferences several times a year may also be required.
