As a shared service under the Corporate Operational Services team, the Safety Specialist supports all employees and management throughout ENMAX in achieving a workplace where nobody gets hurt.
Ensuring the implementation and compliance with the ENMAX Safety Management System (SMS), as well as both Federal & Provincial Legislation and Peer-industry Best Practices, the Specialists role aims to support ENMAX with a proactive approach. By adhering to the principles of Human and Organizational Performance and emphasizing energy-based safety, specialists can cultivate a positive and open-minded safety culture. This approach fosters an environment where workers feel empowered to share their insights and actively participate in safety initiatives.
Major responsibilities:
•Lead or participate in compliance, COR, management system and contractor audits.
•Lead the development of sustainable H&S programs and then implement them consistently throughout the ENMAX organization.
•Lead/Support the development, support implementation, maintenance, or improvement of an enterprise Safety Management System and continuous improvement framework.
•Support on the build and refresh of safety training programs. Provide technical and regulatory Safety Support at Operating Sites, for Maintenance Outages and at Construction Projects performing audits, inspections, hazard assessment coaching, safety procedure training and compliance.
•Support with corporate safety governance framework/safety committee structures and assess governance pathway maturity for effectiveness and opportunities for improvement.
•Support management on the integration of safety into their business which produce tangible outcomes, such as, but not limited to coaching, training, mentoring, and collaborating across the business on varying safety initiatives, inspections, consensus-builder, advocate, tutor, coach, and mentor.
•Understand the EEI Safety Classification and Learning Model and apply it to high energy incidents while focusing on direct controls.
•Lead and participate in Safety investigations. Utilizing the Edison Electric Institute’s SCL model and High Energy Control Assessment (HECA).
•Participate in a rotational On Call program to provide Safety support as needed both on and off site.
•Provide support to business units as a subject matter expert on matters pertaining to Safety including a focused mindset using the Human and Organization Performance model and contribute to learning teams when applicable.
•Assist in the delivery of safety communications internally and externally.
•Conduct analysis on safety metrics and research on industry best practice, write reports and present reports.
•Create safety communications and/or reports internally and externally related to ENMAX’s incidents, SMS, audits, and management reviews for all levels of employees.
•Actively participate in emergency preparedness, response planning, and test exercises
•Ability to support large plant outages through a Safety POV the Capability to assist and engage with contractual workers and plant management.
Education required:
•University degree or technical diploma in Sciences.
•Degree/diploma in Health & Safety is preferred.
•Professional Designation - Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and/or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), and/or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) are preferred and required to be maintained.
Qualifications and experience:
•A minimum of 7 years' experience in a health and safety role.
•Power utility or power generation plant operational experience is preferred.
•Formal safety investigation training (e.g. TapRoot, BowTie. Kepner-Trego as past use, but with ability to take newer investigation training as required).
•Significant experience with Safety Management Systems and Standards (e.g. ISO 45001) and audits.
•Safety analytical experience.
•Ability to be ON CALL and support as required. Weekend work may be required based on business needs.
•Familiarity with various software platforms (Maximo, Microsoft Office Suite, Infolink, WORKDAY).
•COR Auditor Certification preferred.
•Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License is a must.

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
