At Freedom Solar, we have built a customer-focused, turnkey solar installation experience that is unusual in the industry. Unlike most solar companies, we serve our customers through the entirety of their solar journey, from marketing and sales, to installation, to service and warranty coverage. As we have scaled, we have remained true to our startup roots, with dedication, creativity, resourcefulness, and speed inherent to our culture. We care deeply about our customers and the environment, and everything we do reflects that. And we aspire that our Safety team emulates and enhances this culture.
Freedom Solar Power is looking for a Safety Specialist to join our team! In this position, you’ll be the Safety Director’s right hand to ensure our Commercial, Residential and HVAC technicians, installation crews, electricians, and site assessors have the training, equipment, and opportunity to Do the Job Right & Go Home Unharmed.
Essential Job Duties and Functions
•SET THE STANDARD AND LEAD BY EXAMPLE, with the mindset of being a trusted partner – a collaborative mindset versus an enforcement mindset.
•DEVELOP THE PEOPLE WE NEED by being the safety and quality training subject matter expert for operational leadership, helping to develop great installers, crew leads, electricians, and site assessors. You will train all new hires and train and mentor all crew leads
•HELP SET EXPECTATIONS by assisting in the development of training curricula and meeting agendas that focus on helping the Boots On The Ground (BOTG) Do the Job Right & Go Home Unharmed.
•TEACH OUR PEOPLE HOW TO COMMUNICATE by leading, modeling, and coaching proper techniques for conducting pre-job Job Safety Analysis (JSA) crew meetings, weekly safety meetings, and safety stand-down lessons learned reviews. You will be expected to rotate leading a Monday morning safety meeting at ~6:30 AM in each region you cover.
•ENSURE EXPECTATIONS ARE BEING MET by conducting Job Site Observations (JSOs) to ensure the BOTGs are meeting safety and quality expectations. This requires observing from the ground, getting on the roof, and climbing into the attic, using your experience to be a safety and quality blind spot mirror and fixing the issues hands-on in real-time when needed, using the opportunity to help the crew improve.
•BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN CORPORATE EXPECTATIONS & BOTG WORKING REALITY by observing the situation (on the ground/roof and in the attic), listening to the story, and determining where the issues lie and why they’re there, using your experience to train, mentor, and coach them in their time of need – turning problems into opportunities for improvement.
•SHOOT STRAIGHT by having crucial conversations with operations and safety leaders when safety and quality expectations aren’t being met, especially when corporate expectations aren’t feasible for the BOTG’s working reality.
•HELP FIGURE OUT WHAT WENT RIGHT & WRONG by investigating and analyzing good catches, close calls, and incidents, determining root causes, and contributing factors, and developing and communicating lessons learned through incident reports, safety alerts, and weekly safety meetings.
•HELP THE TEAM LEARN & INTENTIONALLY IMPROVE by tracking and managing the correction actions and continuous improvement log.
•HELP OUR PEOPLE HEAL by providing emergency care evaluation and first aid, when required, ensuring injured workers are medically evaluated and treated, if needed, and overseeing injury case management follow-up related to the return to work and restricted duty programs.
•ENSURE THE TEAM HAS THE GEAR THEY NEED to Do the Job Right & Go Home Unharmed by maintaining an inventory of safety, quality, and first aid supplies at regional warehouses.
•BE ACCOUNTABLE by communicating goals, tasks, and daily activities to operational and safety leaders.
•AND ANYTHING ELSE as required by the Regional Ops Director/Ops Manager and Safety Director.
Qualifications:
•3-5 years of construction safety experience (preferably solar, electrical, or roofing preferred)
•Valid driver's license with a clear record.
•Physically able to perform onsite Job Site Observations on the roof by climbing a ladder and using a fall protection system and inspecting attic work in freezing and hot conditions.
•Travel Required: ~50-75%.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:
•Experience teaching First Aid, defensive driving, and other safety courses preferred.
•Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
•Must have computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite. (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
•Working knowledge of all federal, state, and local safety regulations.
•Able to thrive in a heavy multitasking environment.
•Desire to continuously learn and improve.
•Self-motivated and able to work without constant supervision.
We understand you may be a great candidate without fitting all our preferred experience, knowledge, skills, and attributes. And you may have other skills that are valuable for the role, but which we haven’t thought of. Because we recognize this and we value diversity of thought, experience, and background, we still encourage you to apply.
