Job Description: Safety Manager

Position Summary: The Safety Manager plays a key role in promoting a strong safety culture across construction projects through proactive leadership, field presence, and technical expertise. This position is split between field operations and office responsibilities (approximately 70/30 split), ensuring compliance with safety regulations, supporting continuous improvement, and reducing risk across the organization. The Safety Manager works closely with field crews, project teams, and senior leadership to prevent injuries, drive regulatory compliance, and apply human performance principles in daily operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Culture & Leadership

- Promote a culture of safety and human performance improvement across all levels of the organization.

- Mentor project managers and supervisors on safety values and leadership (“MAKE IT SAFE” principles).

- Act as a trusted advisor to project leadership, driving engagement and accountability in safety practices.

- Partner with field teams to build safety champions and increase frontline involvement.

Strategy, Risk Management & Compliance

- Lead the implementation of corporate and project-specific safety initiatives.

- Conduct risk assessments with a focus on preventing Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) incidents.

- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.

- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA and DOT standards.

- Stay current on regulatory changes and communicate updates to key stakeholders.

- Oversee fleet safety and DOT compliance, including telematics, HOS data, and DVIR inspections.

Training & Development

- Design and deliver engaging training programs on key safety topics (e.g., hazard recognition, equipment use, fire prevention, chemical handling, etc.).

- Provide project-specific training to meet site requirements.

- Administer training and road tests for CDL and DOT-regulated drivers.

- Conduct field competency assessments to ensure understanding and application of safety procedures.

Field Inspections & Audits

- Perform regular jobsite inspections and audits across all divisions (Utility, Lighting, Wood, Warehouse).

- Identify hazards, document findings, and ensure timely corrective actions.

- Conduct safety observations and verify closure of identified issues.

- Perform gate checks and ensure compliance with inspection and fleet readiness standards.

Incident Response & Continuous Improvement

- Support incident investigations and lead root cause analysis (RCA).

- Track corrective actions to closure and ensure lessons learned are shared organization-wide.

- Develop and distribute safety alerts and follow-up communications.

- Analyze safety trends and work with field leaders to implement improvements.

Reporting & Analytics

- Track and report safety metrics by region.

- Analyze driver compliance and safety performance using telematics and ELD systems.

- Maintain documentation of safety-related recognitions and disciplinary actions.

- Present safety data and recommendations to superintendents and leadership.

Qualifications:

- Education & Experience

- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Health, or related field.

- 4–5 years of experience in construction safety management.

- In-depth knowledge of OSHA Construction and DOT regulations.

- Skills & Competencies

- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence across all levels.

- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

- Proven experience building trust and engagement with field personnel.

- Skilled in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and data-driven decision-making.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and ELD/telematics systems.

- Other Requirements

- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

- Ability to travel 70% of the time to jobsite locations.

- Physically able to work on active construction sites and perform field inspections as needed.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to walk, stand, and move around active construction sites for extended periods.

- Frequent climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling required during inspections.

- Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 40 pounds unassisted.

- Tolerance for working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather.

- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and safely enter/exit construction areas and equipment.

- Visual and auditory acuity to identify hazards and effectively observe worksite activities.

Mental Requirements:

- Strong attention to detail with ability to identify potential safety hazards and regulatory violations.

- Ability to remain calm under pressure and make decisions in dynamic or emergency situations.

- Capable of multitasking and managing time effectively in both field and office environments.

- Ability to read and interpret complex regulatory documents and technical information.

- High level of emotional intelligence to lead safety conversations and influence without authority.

- Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to risk mitigation and safety planning.

Pay Range: $100,000-115,000

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To: Vice President, Safety

Location: Hybrid, Traveling Role & On-site
