Railcar Repair and Maintenance Technician

Schedule: Monday- Friday primarily, but some weekend work may be required. Day Shift
Position Summary
Pattison Company has expanded our operations and is seeking Railcar Repair and Maintenance Technicians to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity within our well-established company. Technicians will report directly to the Railcar Repair and Maintenance Manager and be responsible for performing hands-on repairs of stored railcars at our Clayton, IA site as well as travel to off-site locations for repairs. Travel Requirements:
•Must be open to travel a few days per week for overnight stays.
•Additional pay per hour when traveling.
•Hotels and meal per diems covered while on the road.
Primary Responsibilities
As a Railcar Repair and Maintenance Technician, you will:
•Interpret blueprints and specifications to complete railcar repairs.
•Hand weld in all positions (fillet and groove).
•Follow all safety regulations and work in compliance with company policies.
•Ensure customer satisfaction by completing repairs to expected standards.
•Maintain and complete invoicing, inspections, and work order documentation.
•Obtain and maintain Single Car Testing Certification (ASCTD/MSCTD – provided by company).
•Demonstrate strong knowledge of AAR rules and regulations.
•Perform railcar inspections and identify necessary repairs.
•Repair and replace defective components (truck assemblies, safety appliances, brake systems, wheels, draft systems).
•Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues on railcars.
•Inspect bearings, seals, gaskets, and coupler assemblies.
•Test and operate engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
•Perform general cleaning and maintenance of railcars.
•Take on additional responsibilities as needed.
•Qualifications & Requirements
Understand AAR Rules and Regulations or have the ability to learn quickly.
•Have knowledge of railroad operations, including switching, routing, and rail repair.
•Work independently and as part of a team.
•Be willing and able to travel overnight when required.
•Physically operate and climb on/off railcars and ladders.
•Work at heights and in confined spaces.
•Wear a half-mask respirator for up to 12 hours.
•Lift 60 to 80 pounds without mechanical assistance.
•Work up to 12-hour shifts when necessary.
•Stand for 6-12 hours on uneven surfaces and bend/stoop as needed.
•Proficiently speak and write English.
Education & Work Experience
•Welding experience is a plus.
•Previous railcar repair experience preferred.
•High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
Certifications & Licenses
•Class A CDL will be given priority
•AAR Welding Certification preferred.
•MSHA Part 48 certification required (Training available on-site).
•Valid Driver’s License required.
