Job Title: Power Engineer Department: Terminal Operations Location: Prince Rupert, British Columbia Reporting to: Terminal Manager Provides Supervision to: N/A Position Type: Full-Time
This role is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all steam, thermal, and fire-protection systems and other key operating systems on the Company’s fuel barges. This includes the operation, monitoring, inspection, and maintenance of a steam boiler, a closed-loop thermal oil system, assigned fire-suppression systems and other systems on the barges which support fuel handling operations.
· Operate, monitor, and control a marine steam boiler and associated auxiliaries in accordance with applicable safety standards and regulations, manufacturer specifications, and Transport Canada Marine Safety requirements.
· Operate and maintain a closed-loop thermal oil heating system, ensuring safe operating temperatures, circulation, pressure control, and system integrity in support of fuel heating and transfer operations.
· Operate and maintain barge water-maker and oily-water-separator systems.
· Monitor pressures, temperatures, combustion performance, and safety devices to ensure continuous regulatory compliance and safe operation.
· Adjust system parameters to meet operational demands while protecting equipment integrity and efficiency.
· Maintain operational readiness of fixed and portable fire-suppression systems associated with machinery spaces and fuel-handling areas, in accordance with applicable regulations, vessel certification requirements, and Company SMS.
· Conduct routine inspections and functional checks of fire-suppression equipment, including alarms, control interfaces, release mechanisms, and isolation valves.
· Ensure fire-suppression systems are correctly configured and available prior to and during fuel transfer, bunkering, and thermal system operations.
· Report deficiencies, impairments, or regulatory non-compliances related to fire-suppression systems and coordinate corrective actions with management and approved service providers.
· Participate in fire drills, emergency response exercises, and incident response in accordance with applicable regulations and Company emergency procedures.
· Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs on boilers, thermal oil, and other systems, burners, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, instrumentation, safety devices, and assigned fire-suppression components, in accordance with manufacturer requirements.
· Prepare equipment for regulatory inspections and audits.
· Monitor boiler water chemistry (where applicable) and the condition of other systems to maximize system reliability and lifespan.
· Work with Terminal Manager and others to conduct and assist with monitoring programs to identify improvement opportunities.
· Maintain, collect, and analyze data to apply analytical thinking and analysis tools for root cause and/or cause-and-effect determination.
· Ensure assets and their housekeeping are kept to high standards.
· Lead by example and enforce the Company’s safe working practices.
· Ensure all boiler, thermal oil, pressure, fire-suppression, water-making and oily-water-separator systems comply with regulatory and Company SMS requirements.
· Respond to alarms, abnormal conditions, and emergency situations, including but not limited to boiler trips, thermal oil leaks, fires, or loss of fire-protection capability during active operations.
· Participate in hazard assessments, toolbox meetings, safety audits, and incident investigations.
· Immediately escalate safety-critical issues or regulatory concerns related to boilers, thermal oil systems, fire-suppression systems, barge water-making systems, and oily-water-separator systems.
· Maintain accurate logbooks, inspection records, and maintenance documentation in the Company’s maintenance management system.
· Coordinate closely with Rail & Barge Operators, terminal personnel, and management to ensure safe integration of thermal, fire-protection, and fuel-handling operations.
· Identify key upgrades and initiatives for future drydocking and/or class surveys as required.
· Build and maintain trusted relationships with vendors to sustain quality of goods, timely delivery, and compliance with contracts
· Support all aspects of the day-to-day operation including but not limited to assisting with the movement of rail cars, draining of rail cars, handling lines and other duties as may be required and determined by the Shift Supervisor and/or Terminal Manager.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Terminal Manager.
- Minimum of 3-5 years’ operational experience is required, experience in a fuel handling operation is preferred.
- 3rd Class Power Engineer Certification is preferred, 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate is required.
- SOTO Certification preferred.
- Strong regulatory awareness and inspection readiness.
- High level of safety leadership and emergency response capability.
- Experience working on electrical components up to 480 V preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of the overall team.
- Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude along with an understanding of modern maintenance and reliability best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
- Strong organizational, planning, and analytical skills, with attention to detail so that workflow is managed efficiently and accurately
- Adapts to frequent changes in workload; adjust priorities quickly as circumstance dictates
- Proficiency with Microsoft programs and computerized maintenance management systems is preferred.
- Exercises discretion, tact and judgement when handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license and a valid passport
- Fluent in English
- Successfully pass all pre-employment screening, including and not limited to medical and alcohol & drug testing as deemed applicable by Wolverine Terminals and/or Transport Canada with respect to marine and rail requirements.
- Work outdoors for extended periods in adverse weather conditions.
- Work rotating shift patterns, up to and including 12-hour shift.
- Lift up to 50lbs, climb ladders, bend, crawl, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
- Wear full or half-face respirators, including SCBA.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally.
- Respond to calls after-hours as required.
- Must adhere to Company Alcohol & Drug policies.
