Position Purpose
The Lead Field Technician oversees the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of solar MET stations. This hands-on role includes field leadership, technical execution, safety enforcement, and mentorship of junior technicians. The position requires weekly travel and direct coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient field operations.
Key Responsibilities and DutiesLeadership & Supervision
•Lead, mentor, and coach field technicians during field deployments, promoting technical proficiency, safety, and quality workmanship.
•Assign tasks, prioritize project work, and coordinate daily activities to ensure efficient and safe execution.
•Provide training and guidance to local technicians and internal team members to support long-term field capability development.
•Model GroundWork’s safety-first culture and ensure adherence to site protocols and regulatory standards at all times.
Field Installation & Commissioning
•Travel weekly to project sites across the continental U.S. for the installation and commissioning of solar meteorological (MET) stations.
•Assemble and mount structural components, sensors, and enclosures according to engineering specifications.
•Wire and test meteorological instruments; update and configure datalogger firmware and operating systems.
•Install solar power kits, fencing, and communications infrastructure as required by the site.
•Set up and operate quality control (QC) kits to verify instrument functionality and data integrity.
•Support commissioning activities, including instrument validation, photo documentation, and data submission.
Technical Troubleshooting & Maintenance
•Perform advanced field diagnostics and resolve electrical, mechanical, and communications issues using appropriate tools and software.
•Interface with dataloggers and field devices using communication protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, Modbus).
•Ensure all field systems operate within design specifications and escalate issues when necessary.
Communication & Stakeholder Coordination
•Act as the primary field contact for EPCs, landowners, and local stakeholders; maintain professional, solution-oriented communication.
•Coordinate safety training, daily check-ins, and site arrival procedures with client site personnel.
•Communicate status updates, schedule changes, and field needs with internal stake holders, supervisors, and project management teams.
Documentation & Reporting
•Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all field work, including installation records, maintenance actions, site conditions, and safety checklists.
•Submit commissioning packages, photo sets, and QC logs for internal review and client delivery.
•Ensure documentation supports quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and knowledge transfer.
Safety & Compliance
•Enforce strict adherence to jobsite safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Arc Flash, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
•Lead by example in safe work practices, proactively identifying and mitigating field risks.
•Ensure compliance with all GroundWork safety protocols and site-specific procedures.
Quality Control
•Conduct on-site inspections of team work, ensuring installations meet GroundWork and client quality standards.
•Identify deviations or quality concerns and implement corrective actions in real time.
Skills/Qualifications
•Minimum of 3 years of electrical installation and repair experience.
•Experience with power tools and hand tools required.
•Journeyman or licensed industrial electrician preferred.
•Experience with site safety work procedures including LOTO and Job Safety Analysis Sheets.
•Advanced electrical troubleshooting skills.
•Basic understanding of how to interface with and understand various communication devices that operate under the TCP and Modbus protocols.
•Proficiency on a PC computer with basic hardware, software, and networking abilities.
•Knowledge of and experience in the solar market is a strong plus.
•Valid Driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
•Positive ‘can-do’ attitude.
Physical Demands
•The physical demands of this position are limited to those found in a normal field service environment.
•Activities can include extended periods of standing, bending or kneeling.
•Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
•Driving required to sites, often on unpaved roads.
•Extensive airplane travel required to job locations, primarily in the continental US.
