The successful candidate will identify opportunities to optimize plant operations and improve efficiency through the development of new initiatives to increase production, reduce risk, improve reliability, improve safety and minimize environmental impacts.
- Develop the process design for project proposals.
- Provide comprehensive design services by establishing design criteria and implementing the preparation of simulation models, equipment specifications, design computations, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams and detailed calculations in accordance with basic project requirements.
- Analyze the designs of vendors providing specific equipment.
- Develop and conduct process and/or equipment optimization/evaluation studies and recommend options to progress.
- Develop process simulation models for more complex systems, including pressure relief disposal systems.
- Demonstrated ability to complete hydraulic calculations and pump/compressor sizing.
- Prepare deliverables including BFDs, PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, data sheets, calculations, and report inputs.
- Act as a process lead during safety and hazard assessments.
- Ability to seal and take professional responsibility, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances for design work conducted.
- Check and file documentation according to company guidelines.
- Prepare and execute feasibility studies, conceptual designs, and process evaluations.
- Perform process simulations & modelling of oil processing facilities.
- Prepare, review, and stamp key design documents such as material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, and shutdown keys.
- Perform line and PSV sizing and prepare equipment process data sheets.
- Participate in P&ID and HAZOP reviews, develop control narratives, and prepare start-up and operating manuals.
- Strong knowledge of process design principles and engineering standards.
- Proficiency with process simulation software (e.g., HYSYS, Symmetry, Aspen Flare System Analyzer, ProMax).
- Skilled in developing PFDs, P&IDs, and heat and material balances.
- Ability to prepare and review process data sheets, control narratives, and operating manuals.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills combined with a focus on customer service.
- A self-starter attitude with an aptitude for problem solving and a strong work ethic, with the ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and encourage best practices on the job site.
- Computer skills, problem analysis, and technical translation skills.
- Chemical Engineering Degree and must provide proof of P.Eng in Alberta; registration in other jurisdictions within Canada and the United States is an asset.
- 5–10 years of experience within a Process and/or Plant Engineering role in process industries (i.e., chemical, pulp & paper, mining, oil & gas) and willingness to learn and eventually specialize within Process Safety Management.
- Operations experience is an asset.
