Great Bear Project
In March 2022, Kinross acquired Great Bear Resources and its flagship Great Bear project (GBR), located near Red Lake, Ontario. The Great Bear property is a greenfield, large-scale deposit with the potential for significant open pit and underground operations. At the start of 2025, the project moved into the detailed engineering and major equipment procurement phase.
Job Description
- Reporting to the Great Bear Project Engineering Manager, manage design and engineering of the instrumentation and control related works associated with the Great Bear Project, in particular process plant instrumentation and process control, utilities, water management instrumentation and control, mining services and infrastructure at surface and underground from Detailed Engineering to Field Execution.
- Lead the design and engineering of the instrumentation and control works for the Great Bear Project, including reviews of engineering specifications and drawings, providing expertise related to the instrumentation and control disciplines and providing field fit solutions during the construction phase of the Project.
- Provide technical review and expertise on instrumentation, control and automation during Great Bear Project Detailed Engineering for process plant, surface infrastructure, underground infrastructure, with attention to.
- Prepare summary information, support technical briefings and provide recommendations to the senior management team for major project decisions.
- Ensure that the engineering design is safe and fit for purpose.
- Collaboratively work with permitting technical team.
- Review material take-offs and capital cost estimates from third party consultants.
- Participate in the development of requests for proposals to be issued instrumentation, control and automation system vendors and contractors, and assist with the selection.
- Perform Vendor document reviews and comment on a wide range of technical documents.
- Review and ensure timely delivery of as-built, redline drawings and final official blackline as-built drawings from respective vendors / contractors.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams of consultants, contractors, vendors and work closely with the Project team to ensure quality engineering deliverables regarding safety in design, constructability and cost.
- Participate in the review of process functional descriptions.
- Review of process control narratives and selection of proper instrumentation and control solutions for various applications.
- Coordinate and visit the Red Lake site as required, to resolve problems, interpret drawings and documents and provide technical support during the construction phase.
- The role may transition from Detailed Engineering working with different engineering consultants to field execution with the Owner’s Team and onsite contractors.
- Carry out various special technical requests from the project team for evaluating potential design alternatives or optimizations and confirmatory modelling of piping features using software applications.
- Participate in development and review of PFDs and P&IDs for various processes.
- Development and deployment of Energy Management and Asset Management information systems and reporting with DCS and PMS.
- Other related activities as directed by the Great Bear Project Engineering Managers
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronics or control system engineering.
- Familiar with most known industrial automation communication protocols (Modbus, EithernetIP, ProfiNet, Canopen), in addition to standard TCP/IP network skills
- Knowledge of industrial safety systems, such as LOPA, ATEX/IECEx zoning
- Familiarity with modern Process Control and Automation methods including Advance Process Control (APC), Ventilation on Demand (VOD), Analytics, simulation tools, Digital Twin and AI tools Experience with specification, startup, and troubleshooting of process control systems on hybrid environment using process control with DCS and high-level integration of vendor PLC applications to DCS, Power Management Systems and SCADA systems.
- Knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations related to instrumentation and control systems, such as ISA, ANSI/IEEE, IEC, CEC and NEC, NFPA
- Formal professional designation in electrical, electronics or control system engineering in Ontario (ideally but not necessary depending on experience)
- Hands-on programming experience of popular PLCs and DCS systems will be an added advantage.
- 10+ years of related work experience.- Good understanding of mining and associated infrastructure, particularly in cold weather environments.
- Familiarity with gold or similar mineral processing and exposure in engineering and commissioning.
- Experience with automation engineering aspects of projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to execution.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of large multi-disciplinary teams.
- Project management or operational experience is an asset.
