The Hydrogen Plant Operations Technician is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and operating various machines and equipment used in HTEC’s hydrogen generation and transfill plant. The operations portion of this role consists of periodic equipment inspections, monitoring equipment operation through dashboards and trending software, and operating compressors, pumps, hydrogen generation, and storage equipment through both automatic and manual control. The operator/technician will also be expected to carry out all preventative and corrective maintenance including shutdown events and troubleshooting and repair of all equipment on site.
This role will be supported by Diagnostic Engineers, Maintenance Technicians, and Management. The Operator/Technician will promote the safe working standards set by HTEC to foster and promote a safe working environment that follows all procedures, permitting, and lock out tag out processes established for the hydrogen generation and transfill plant.
- Monitoring and operating hydrogen generation and transfill processing systems
- Operation of manual and automatic valves, compressors, pumps, motors, and other auxiliary equipment
- Conduct routine inspections of site and equipment per daily operating procedure
- Record required start, end, and settled fill data (pressures, temperatures, times, equipment type, and system configuration) for hydrogen delivery quantity and efficiency metrics.
- Complete work orders as required for daily operations, preventive and corrective maintenance
- Document and track inventory consumption and assignment to work orders
- Conduct inventory cycle counting as required
- Maintain equipment such as electrolyzers, compressors, pumps, motors, and control panels
- Properly and safely isolate equipment for service and repair including following permitting and lock out tag out procedures
- Conduct preventative maintenance procedures on existing assets
- Contribute to plant monitoring and plant reliability improvement
- Participate in the commissioning and start-up of new equipment
- Report all critical information to Plant Manager and Diagnostic Engineering
- Conduct a proper shift turnover to the oncoming personnel ensuring they are aware of ongoing activities, plan of the day updates, and any changes that took place during your shift
- Maintain a safe and clean workspace by following the requirements set forth by HTEC Health and Safety rules and standard operating procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager
- Monitor dashboard process indicators, instrumentation gauges and meters, and report any anomalies or trends
- Adjust equipment as directed by instruction or approved operational changes (pressure, temperature, flow, and time setpoints)
- Ensure equipment is properly lubricated and all site glasses and indicators are visible and readable
- Apply industrial safety practices, including hazard identification, safe‑work permitting, and adherence to standard operating procedures
- Ability to follow codes, procedures, and report abnormal conditions or safety concerns promptly
- Experience operating industrial process equipment such as compressors, pumps, motors, and valves
- Technical diploma, trade certification, or associate degree in the fields of Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Instrumentation, or a related discipline
- Hands‑on experience maintaining equipment such as compressors, pumps, motors, and control panels
- Strong mechanical aptitude, verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient computer skills and comfort with digital monitoring tools and asset management tools
- Ability to work collaboratively and alone and to complete assigned tasks in an organized and timely manner
- Ability to learn new systems, technologies, and procedures quickly and take on new tasks and responsibilities as the plant evolves
- Ability to collect, record, and interpret operational data such as pressures, temperatures, fill times, trend analysis and system configurations
- Ability to identify equipment anomalies and/or performance trends when provided proper training, and communicate details to supervisor or engineering team
- Dependability in following shift routines, daily plans, and communicating changes or issues during operations
- Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds and climb ladders and scaffolding
- Ability to work a twelve (12) hour rotating shift, holidays, and overtime
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record
- Experience in industrial gas, chemical processing, power generation, or related plant environments with focus on high pressure gases / fluids
- Experience maintaining and operating electrolyzer equipment is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to safely isolate equipment for service using established permitting and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
- 4th class power engineering training, millwright training, industrial maintenance experience prefered
This position will work 12 hour shifts with a 4-day on, 4-day off schedule. The current schedule requires day shift only but once production moves to 24 hours per day, team members will rotate between day shift (12pm to 12am) and night shift (12am to 12pm).
