Job Title: Heavy Equipment Mover / Rigger
Job Purpose and Position Overview: Snow & Company is seeking a talented and skilled Heavy Equipment Mover & Rigger to join our team! We’re currently involved in some interesting, high-impact projects, including the construction of a dry dock, two cutting-edge electric tugboats, and an 8-year contract to build advanced workboats for the US Navy. Key Responsibilities:
•Safely operate heavy equipment (e.g., forklifts, yard vehicles, 25’ – 40’ trailers, bridge / pedestal cranes, hoists, jacks) to move large machinery, ships and components, and structural materials throughout the shipyard.
•Rig, secure, and guide heavy loads using chains, slings, shackles, spreader bars, and other rigging gear in compliance with lifting plans and safety standards.
•Interpret and follow lifting diagrams, blueprints, and engineering drawings to determine rigging requirements and load limits.
•Coordinate with crane operators, signalers, and supervisors to ensure efficient and safe movement of loads.
•Inspect rigging equipment and heavy machinery before use, reporting any wear, damage, or malfunctions.
•Set up and dismantle rigging systems, ensuring proper load distribution and structural integrity.
•Ensure adherence to all OSHA, company, and shipyard safety policies and procedures, especially around confined spaces, high-risk lifts, and heavy load handling.
•Assist with positioning and alignment of heavy components during installation, assembly, or repairs aboard ships or in yard.
•Maintain clean and organized work areas, including staging zones and equipment storage locations.
•Perform other duties as assigned, supporting shipyard operations as needed.
Essential Skills:
•Rigging Expertise: Proficient in setting up and using rigging systems including slings, chains, wire rope, shackles, spreader bars, and other load-handling gear.
•Heavy Equipment Operation: Skilled in operating forklifts, cranes, hoists, and other heavy machinery used for lifting and moving large components. Knowledgeable in standard rigging hand signals.
•Load Assessment & Planning: Ability to calculate load weights, center of gravity, and proper lifting points; interpret load charts and rigging plans.
•Blueprint & Diagram Reading: Competent in reading and understanding technical drawings, lifting diagrams, and layout plans.
•Safety Consciousness: Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, shipyard safety practices, and proper procedures for lifting and transporting heavy loads.
•Situational Awareness: Excellent awareness of surroundings to anticipate hazards and respond quickly during complex or high-risk lifts.
•Physical Strength & Stamina: Capable of performing physically demanding tasks including lifting, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
•Team Coordination: Works effectively with crane operators, spotters, and fellow riggers to ensure smooth, safe, and coordinated movements.
•Communication Skills: Clear and effective verbal communication, including use of standard hand signals and radios in noisy environments.
•Problem Solving: Able to quickly assess and adjust rigging setups or lifting plans as conditions change or unexpected challenges arise.
•Attention to Detail: Careful and precise in rigging setup, inspections, and equipment handling to avoid damage or injury.
•Tool & Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with inspection, maintenance, and proper use of rigging hardware and heavy-moving tools.
•Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
The work environment is a dynamic, fast-paced shipyard with moderate to loud noise levels due to ongoing production activities. Job duties are performed in production areas and onboard vessels and require:
•The ability to walk to and from job sites, climb inclined stairways, and use vertical ladders
•Frequent bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands/fingers for various tasks
•Occasional reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crawling
•Frequent lifting of up to 20 lbs, with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs
•The ability to work in extreme temperatures and conditions, including areas with limited ventilation
•The ability to enter and work in confined spaces, such as manholes
•The ability to work at heights
•Frequent use of a respirator
•Wearing required safety gear, including a hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing
•Regular exposure to noise from machinery and equipment
