Reporting to the CEO, the Commodity President plays a critical leadership role in achieving the target of becoming a premium pure-play utility that creates value and generates favorable returns. Integrating operational excellence, customer focus and stakeholder engagement is the mandate. Ensuring efficiency, reliability, and sustainability demands the ability to develop teams who execute with precision. Applying a broader view of the business, the Commodity President will ensure that all plans and decisions are made with the needs of Liberty’s customers, communities, employees, and investors at the forefront, instilling accountability for delivering results.
- Align with strategic priorities; ensure the commodity aligns with organizational values and broader goals, including sustainability, regulatory changes, and customer value.
- Define success factors; identify critical factors for success, such as achieving greater transparency, building financial reserves, and adopting innovative billing methods.
- Develop actionable strategies; create a detailed roadmap that outlines specific strategies and actions to achieve defined objectives.
- Implement and prioritize; establish schedules for effective implementation, ensuring alignment with organizational capacity and goals while holding team members accountable
- Promote the value of data; lead by example in adopting data-driven approaches, invest in employee training, share data and collaborate across the business.
- Apply data analytics; use data to action plans that improve efficiencies, reduce costs, minimize waste, enable proactive maintenance, and prevent costly outages.
- Improve customer engagement; leverage data to personalize customer interactions, improve billing accuracy, and offer tailored energy solutions.
- Specific opportunities by commodity may include:
- Predictive maintenance on pipelines, optimizing gas flow, and forecasting demand based on weather patterns and usage trends.
- Optimizing power generation, transmission, and distribution, managing grid stability, and integrating renewable energy sources.
- Monitoring water usage, detecting leaks, optimizing water distribution networks, and managing water quality.
- Develop a comprehensive asset management plan; leverage scale, across geographies, for how the commodity will manage its assets to achieve Liberty’s strategic directions, including maintenance, replacement, and investment.
- Incorporate asset management into the regulatory strategy; collaborate with regulators to demonstrate the value of investments, balance test year and case years.
- Maximize value from assets; apply optimal asset strategies to balance cost, risk, and performance, extending asset life and maintaining service delivery.
- Implement proactive maintenance strategies; drive preventative and predictive maintenance to reduce downtime, optimize performance, and extend asset life.
- Ensure effective lifecycle management; plan for each stage of an asset's life, from acquisition to disposal or replacement, to reduce total cost of ownership and align with long-term planning goals.
- Optimize resource allocation; ensure investments are directed towards impactful projects, maximizing return on investment.
- Cost control and operational efficiency; drive continuous improvement and utility fundamentals to reduce operating and maintenance costs, making space for new investments.
- Plan and analyze; leverage financial models to guide decisions in large-scale projects and account for uncertainties like fluctuating demand and evolving regulations.
- Understand revenue requirement; ensure all team members connect with how the authorized rate of return and the size of the rate base impact profits.
- Protect the business; proactively identify and communicate risks while ensuring reliable services, safeguarding assets, forecasting accurately, and preserving reputation.
- Protect the people; command a safety leadership culture that embraces every action we take.
- Protect sensitive data; promote cybersecurity awareness and set goals for reporting attempts.
- Prioritize asset management and investments; be attuned with the likelihood and impact of asset failure, focusing resources on the most critical and high-risk assets.
- Proactively communicate; share progress and discuss industry risks with regulators, engage customers with trends and forecasts, be transparent and focused about what’s important when speaking with employees.
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, preferably for multi-jurisdictional investor-owned utility - 5+ years of enterprise P&L responsibility
