We are currently hiring a Ground Control Operations Superintendent to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, ON.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM?
This position leads the execution of ground control activities at the Goderich Underground Salt Mine. Reporting to the Operations Manager and working closely with the Engineering Department, this position is responsible for implementing and overseeing the installation and maintenance of all ground support measures in accordance with the approved ground control plans. This position plays a key operational role in maintaining the stability and safety of underground workings by ensuring ground control plans are properly followed, support systems are installed to specification, and conditions are monitored regularly for compliance and effectiveness.
•Execute daily, weekly, and long-term ground control activities in line with the designs and specifications provided by the Engineering Department.
•Directly oversee Shift Supervisors and departmental planner plus indirectly supervise unionized workers.
•Coordinate the ground control crews responsible for the installation of ground support systems such as bolts, mesh, screen, shotcrete.
•Conduct routine inspections and assessment of ground conditions to ensure proper implementation of ground control plans and adherence to safety standards.
•Work collaboratively with Geotechnical Mine Engineers and Mine Planners to ensure clear understanding and practical execution of group support requirements.
•Identify any deviations from plan or emerging ground stability concerns and escalate appropriately for engineering review.
•Ensure proper documentation of ground support installations, inspections, and any corrective plans.
•Maintain compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Mining Regulations, and internal company policies.
•Lead, coach, and develop the ground control team to meet performance, safety and quality standards.
•Participate in incident investigations related to ground conditions and the department. Support the implementation of corrective actions in response to incident investigations.
•Support continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, cost-efficiency, and effective of ground support execution.
•Ensure safety audits are completed as outlined and scheduled by the EHS department.
•Perform other related duties as required.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?
•Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience and 8 – 10 years of experience in the mining or heavy industry.
•3+ years in a supervisory role related to ground support or operations
•Strong knowledge of underground ground support methods, materials and equipment
•Familiarity with Ontario’s OHSA and Mining Act
•Excellent leadership, communication, and decision making skills
•Ability to interpret technical drawings and ground control plans.
•Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
•Experience in underground soft rock mining environment
•Experience working in a unionized environment
•Certification in Supervisor Soft Rock Common Core

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE?
•This is a Monday-Friday position. Overtime may be required in order to support the operations.
•This position is expected to work underground.
