Fire Assay Technicians will be working with samples and carrying out Fire Assay procedures i.e. fluxing, fusing and cupelling samples as per written procedures. This role involves working in a hot environment and mixing dry chemicals, loading trays into a furnace and pouring samples. Experience in Fire Assay is not required, but can be an asset. On the job training is provided. These positions are not suitable for those who cannot do periodic lifting throughout the day. Strict adherences to safety procedures are required.
Hours: Full time, Day Shift 7:00am-3:00pm. Rotating shifts and extended hours may be required.
Education Required: High School Diploma. Background in chemistry is preferred.
- Sample weighing.
- Fluxing samples.
- Loading and unloading samples during the fusing process.
- Loading and unloading samples during the cupellation process.
- Picking beads and labeling test tubes.
- Assist in ensuring turnaround time meets clients and President’s requirements of one week from receipt by working overtime when required.
- Ensure all analysis is produced with high quality.
- Use support site to weigh samples, change status’ and make lab jobs.
- Ensure maintenance is being carried out as required and all logs are being maintained as shown in QOP Fire Assay.
- Maintain departmental housekeeping on a per shift basis.
- Comply with ALL safety procedures including handling of all chemicals as per their MSDS.
- Safety oriented with all aspects of the job.
- Ensure that QOP Fire Assay and the Pb Control Program is followed.
- Any other tasks as determined by Lab Manager/Process Owner.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Display good interpersonal skills.
- Willing to work shift, overtime and week-ends.
- Exhibit common sense.
- Quality driven and pro-active.
- Ability to work well independently and with others.
- Ability to handle several tasks at once.
- Computer skills an asset.
- Possess good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Read, understand, follow work instructions and guidelines accurately and safely.
- Ability to problem solve, multi-task, meet deadline and perform in a fast-paced work environment to achieve turnaround requirement.
- Proven time management skills, quality driven and attention to detail.
- Excellent eye-hand co-ordination and manual dexterity to perform tasks.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, clean shaven in order to safely wear PPE.
