What you'll do
Reporting to the Tax Manager, this small team of 2, is part of the Controller’s department and is responsible for all aspects
of tax. As BC Hydro is a crown corporation that is exempt from paying income taxes the primarily focus of the role is
supporting the business and providing strategic advice around indirect taxes (GST, PST, motor fuel taxes, etc.) and
ensuring tax compliance filings are done accurately and on a timely basis. There is expected growth and development
opportunities in this role in the near term.
Responsibilities:
•Perform detailed tax research and analysis (primarily sales tax), including identifying tax risk and planning opportunities,
for BC Hydro’s business units to support proposed transactions.
•Develop creative and innovative solutions for complex sales tax related problems with suppliers and customers.
•Review and analyze BC Hydro purchases to ensure the appropriate tax treatment.
•Prepare and file BC Hydro’s GST, PST, motor fuel tax and non-resident withholding tax returns.
•Review agreements to determine the application of sales tax and/or non-resident withholding tax.
•Advise BC Hydro groups on tax compliance matters relating to changes in business processes.
•Monitor changes in tax rules, assess the impact to BC Hydro, and communicate the impacts to senior management.
•Prepare detailed working papers to support tax refund opportunities.
•Review and comment on enquiries relating to employee taxable benefits.
•Review cross-border transactions and advise on supplier residency status and the application of non-resident withholding
tax to the supply of services and rentals in Canada by non-resident suppliers.
•Take a lead role in tax related dispute resolution with suppliers, customers, tax authorities and BC Hydro business units.
•Take a lead role in the implementation of changes to tax rates and exemptions in BC Hydro’s financial systems.
•Coordinate with external advisors on the preparation of Canadian corporate, US Federal and state tax returns.
What you bring
The ideal candidate will have:
•A CPA designation or lawyer with 8+ years of relevant experience in public practice or industry. Candidates without a
professional designation are also encouraged to apply if they have 10+ years of relevant experience in public practice or
industry.
•Working knowledge of relevant Federal and Provincial tax statutes (in particular PST) and other related statutes, as well
as case law relating to taxation, real property transactions, and construction contracts.
•Completion of the CPA GST/HST in Depth Tax Course is preferred.
•The ability to effectively influence project teams and operations staff.
•Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship building skills.
•Ability to manage competing demands and short timelines.
•Strong leadership, planning, analytical and project management skills.
•The ability to think creatively and strategically in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.

location.
