Field Technical Supervisor

Field Technical Supervisor’
s primary role is to lead the installation and supervision of transformer monitoring systems, with a strong emphasis on Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) instrumentation. This role demands exceptional technical expertise in transformer instrumentation, particularly in the configuration, commissioning, and integration of DGA systems across a utility’s transformer fleet. The Field Technical Supervisor is responsible for executing and overseeing high-quality, consistent installations, ensuring all work meets operational, safety, and performance standards. Key objectives of this role include: installing and supervising the installation of DGA instruments fleet-wide, supporting related monitoring systems, and serving as a technical authority in field deployment and instrumentation best practices.
Responsibilities•Perform field installation of DGA monitoring equipment on power transformers, including hardware mounting, sensor placement, and system integration.
•Ensure installation meets OEM specifications, industry standards, and utility requirements.
•Oversee and validate DGA system installations performed by contractors or partner teams.
•Provide technical guidance and on-site direction to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with project specifications.
•Set up and program communication interfaces such as Ethernet, RS485, or cellular gateways to ensure reliable remote access to DGA data.
•Integrate DGA monitors with SCADA systems, asset management platforms, or condition-based monitoring tools.
•Conduct field testing and commissioning of DGA monitors and ancillary instrumentation to verify proper operation and data accuracy.
•Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues encountered during installation or startup.
•Collaborate with project managers and clients to develop site execution plans and scheduling for instrumentation deployment.
•Coordinate site access, materials logistics, and manpower allocation for efficient execution of field tasks.
•Evaluate transformer conditions, access limitations, and integration requirements to inform DGA system design and installation planning.
•Maintain detailed records of field activities, system configurations, and commissioning results.
•Submit installation and commissioning documentation in accordance with company and client reporting standards.
•Train end-users and maintenance personnel on the operation and basic troubleshooting of installed DGA equipment.
•Serve as a technical point of contact for post-installation support and performance evaluation.
•Follow all site safety protocols, electrical safety standards, and environmental regulations during field work.
•Participate in job hazard assessments and enforce safe work practices for all team members on-site.
•Support related field instrumentation projects, including temperature sensors, bushing monitors, or moisture sensors.
•Assist engineering and product teams with feedback from field operations to improve future system designs and processes.
•Assume other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
•High school diploma or equivalent is required.
•Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Industrial Technology, Power Systems, or a related technical field is preferred
•Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience with DGA instrumentation, installation, or transformer monitoring systems is required. Strong understanding of DGA principles, equipment, and data interpretation is essential.
•Minimum of 3-5 years of field experience working in or around high-voltage electric utility substations, with proven ability to adhere to safety protocols and operational procedures.
•Ability to work with Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), and device-specific software for configuration, diagnostics, and reporting.
•Hands-on experience configuring communication systems (e.g., Ethernet, RS-485, Modbus, cellular, fiber optics) for field instrumentation, including integration with SCADA or condition monitoring platforms.
•Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical information to diverse audiences including engineers, technicians, and non-technical stakeholders. A strong customer-focused mindset is essential.

•Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and periodic and a pre-employment criminal background check.
•Must be willing to travel; minimum 50%-70%.
•Must be able to drive daily to customer job sites and be available for periodic overnight travel.
•Must be willing to work flexible hours and overtime, and occasional weekends, holidays and nights.
•Must be able to crawl, climb, stand and lift up to 50 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodations.
•Valid and current driver's license with a clean driving record.

Working Conditions
This job requires the ability to respond to 24/7 call outs and to work extended hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Work may be conducted outdoors in all weather conditions, near low-, medium-, and high-voltage equipment and heavy machinery, in areas with elevations in excess of 100 feet, and confined spaces adhering to strict safety protocols. Exposure to loud noises from machinery is common, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This job involves risk of electrical shock. This job requires frequent travel between RMS facilities and customer sites.
Physical Requirements
The position demands physical mobility to navigate uneven surfaces, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, fine motor skills for handling small components and tools, and the capability to climb ladders and work at heights. Sustained physical effort, including standing, bending, pushing, digging, pulling, kneeling, crawling and reaching for extended periods, is required. Good vision, including color vision and depth perception, and the ability to hear alarms and communications in noisy environments are essential. Additionally, proficiency in speaking, hearing, reading, and typing in English is required for effective communication and documentation.
