The Field Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level position responsible for performing semi-skilled work associated with the operation and maintenance of the force mains, diversion chambers, flood control chambers, storm water overflow regulators, air relief chambers, and interceptor and collection system. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Field Maintenance Workers III and IV, the Field Services Supervisor, or other Division Management, as required. Work is performed at various locations along the Harrisburg collection and conveyance system and wastewater treatment facility.
- Operating mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, generators, sewer flushing equipment, rodding equipment, jackhammers, and vacuum truck
- Performing maintenance and repair work on force mains, diversion chambers, flood control chambers, stormwater overflow regulators, inlets and interceptor and collection systems
- Using hand and power tools including brooms, rakes, shovels, ladders, manhole hooks, hammers, saws, and similar equipment
- Entering and performing work in sewer systems, including confined spaces up to approximately 35 feet deep
- Lifting and removing manhole covers with appropriate tools and assistance
- Setting up traffic control devices, acting as a flagger, and maintaining a safe work environment
- Completing assignments efficiently, safely, and in a timely manner
- Basic mechanical aptitude
- Basic understanding of the principles and operation of automatic flow regulation, sampling and flow recording equipment
- Ability to operate and assist with mechanical and maintenance equipment under general supervision
- Ability to use a variety of hand tools and power tools safely
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Basic understanding of wastewater collection and conveyance systems or the ability to learn
- Basic knowledge and ability to interpret technical manuals, drawings, specifications, blueprints, and layouts as they relate to the sewer collection system.
- Basic understanding of carpentry.
- Ability to recognize hazards and react appropriately to alarms and dangerous situations
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, climbing, working in confined spaces, and prolonged standing or walking
- Ability to maintain accurate records manually and using basic computer software
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A combination of skills, education and experience providing an equivalent background and a demonstrated ability to perform the duties and achieve certification as an operator of a wastewater collection system.
- Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, Class C
