The Geotechnical Team is responsible for providing Engineering services on capital and maintenance of Transmission
overhead and underground circuits, Stations, and Microwave projects in the province of BC for all phases of design from
desktop study to implementation. For these projects, the responsibilities of the team would include Professional of Record
and/or Owner’s Engineer roles for: Geohazard and Geotechnical risk assessments and designs (including developing site
exploration program or more often assisting the Consultant who will setup the site exploration program); site preparation;
seismic analysis; ground displacement predictions and soil structure interaction; foundations, retaining structures and rip
rap designs; RFP preparation and evaluation; geotechnical and geohazard reports; and field reviews and monitoring of
construction.
The team will also be responsible for emergency response caused by slope instability and or erosion and avalanches
including assessment of geotechnical stability of work zones that will be used by operation crews.
In the maintenance portfolio, the team conducts two annual programs: Geohazard and Civil Protective program. The
Geohazard program is conducted through a combination of helicopter, boat, drone and ground surveys of Transmission
assets. The results of the annual maintenance program are fed into the team’s annual Civil Protective program for repairs,
remediation or replacement.
The work environment is considered multi-disciplinary as the candidate will work closely with Electrical, Structural and Civil
disciplines as well as Asset Management, Environmental, Safety, Forestry, and Construction & Contract Management
teams. The Geotechnical Team’s focus is on technical aspect of the projects and management of those projects is
supported by a team of professional project managers internally and externally.
The Engineering Team Lead role will require general knowledge of various technical guides and design codes in such as:
Provincial and or EGBC’s guidelines for landslides and floods; Mapping and Assessing Terrain Stability Guidebook
published by BC Ministry of Environment; Seismic Microzonation Maps published by EGBC; EGBC Legislated Flood
Assessments in a Changing Climate in BC Version 2.1; Ministry of Forests Research Program; Debris Flow Control
Structures for Forest Engineering; IEEE 691 “Guide for Transmission Structure Foundation Design and Testing”; seismic
design according to British Columbia Building Code and design practices such as Boulanger & Idriss (2014); and the
Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual.
The successful candidate will lead and supervise a team of about 10 engineers, technologists, and consultants to complete
the assigned work. In addition to the team members, the Team Lead is responsible for administration of Engineering
consulting services prequalified to deliver engineering work packages for the team. The team’s procurement of consulting
services is through a series of master service agreement whose scope, change order and payment of invoice require
approval of the Team Lead.
Knowledge of geology of BC and experience in geohazard assessment and or geotechnical design of linear structures such
as transmission lines, road and pipeline and leading a team will be an asset. The successful candidate will not be expected
to have expert level knowledge in all of the below duties but some exposure to all and expert level knowledge in some
aspects outlined above is considered an asset. The successful candidate will be required to travel to remote locations for
both emergency response and regular design and maintenance works.
