Position Overview
The Director of Commercial Structuring serves as a critical bridge between our analytical modeling capabilities and commercial execution, translating complex power market analytics into viable commercial structures for utility-scale transactions. This role requires a unique combination of technical modeling expertise, commercial acumen, and exceptional communication skills to transform model outputs into compelling value propositions for distribution utilities, large commercial and industrial customers, and data centers and PPA purchases. This role reports to the Chief Commercial Officer.
Base Compensation:
annual salary of $210–$230k depending on experience.
Key Responsibilities
•Tailor commercial offerings to meet specific needs of distribution utilities, C&I customers, and data centers
•Address unique requirements such as load following, firm capacity, and reliability standards
•Create scalable solutions that can be adapted across different customer segments and market conditions
•Analyze and interpret outputs from power system modeling platforms and models (ie: PLEXOS)
•Validate modeling assumptions and results through collaboration with the resource planning and analytics teams
•Identify key value drivers, risks, and opportunities within complex power flow analyses
•Ensure that market rules, regulatory requirements and transmission constraints, required energy, capacity (ELCC accreditation, planning reserve margin), renewable attributes inform offerings and are understood by the commercial team
•Design innovative commercial structures that optimize value for both Guzman Energy and customers
•Develop pricing strategies based on locational marginal prices, capacity factors, and market fundamentals
•Create flexible contract terms that address customer risk tolerance and operational requirements including customer demand and energy usages and risk factors and allocation
•Structure power purchase agreements, capacity contracts, and ancillary service arrangements
•Partner closely with the origination and supply team to ensure commercial structures are executable and competitive
•Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders including executives and customers
•Collaborate with risk management and finance to ensure appropriate hedging and credit considerations
•Work with legal and regulatory teams to ensure compliance and enforceability of structures
•Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership and external customers
•Participate in customer negotiations
Required Qualifications
•Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or related quantitative field; MBA or advanced degree preferred
•7+ years of experience in power markets, energy trading, or renewable energy development
•3+ years of experience with power system modeling software (PLEXOS, PROMOD, GridView, or similar)
•Proven track record in commercial structuring or origination within the energy sector
•Strong understanding of electricity markets, transmission systems, and grid operations especially in the WECC and SPP and in emerging markets
•Knowledge of renewable energy technologies, energy storage, and distributed resources
•Proficiency in data analysis tools (Python, R, MATLAB, or advanced Excel)
•Familiarity with market simulation software and optimization tool
•Demonstrated ability to structure complex energy transactions and power purchase agreements
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present to C-suite executives
•Strong negotiation skills and commercial instincts
•Experience working with utilities, large C&I customers, or data center operators
