We are looking for a Designer III to join us in San Diego, CA. Designers are responsible for design and drafting of industrial and utility electrical design projects. This work can include, but is not limited to, the development of one-lines, schematics, panel design, physical design plans such as conduit and duct bank plans, grounding plans, lighting plans, cable and connection plans as well as detailed material take-offs and bills of material.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
These are functions a qualified incumbent or applicant must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Visits work sites to collect information and assist with determination of scope to enable designs of moderate to high complexity for additions and modifications to Company gas and/or electric facilities from onset through completion of project.
- As necessary, meets with customers to identify specific design limitations, and customer requests.
- Prepares service orders, field memos and moderate construction work orders with safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs that conform to Company policies, safety orders, and CPUC regulations
- Provide knowledge of and experience with the interpretation and application of design and engineering principals, overhead, underground, distribution, CPUC Rules, gas and electric theory standard practices and construction calculations
- Required proficiency in AutoCAD, Geographical Information Systems, MS Office applications, Smartsheet, SAP and web based applications.
- Identifies site specific obstacles, relays this information to customers, and presents design options for consideration.
- Associate degree or completion of related technical trade school courses, or equivalent experience is required.
- 4+ years of utility distribution experience- SDG&E OH & UG qualified Distribution Designer

Candidates and incumbents need to have the following skills:
- Capable of leading a large and/or complex multi-discipline project with minimal engineering
- Capable of managing a design team or coordinating design for a group of projects or workstream.
- Able to perform training, coordination, and scheduling work assignments, prepare weekly cost, manpower, and progress reports, monitors projects and recommends changes to improve operating efficiency.
- Initiates and maintains contact with senior-level management and is skilled in dispute resolution and negotiation of critical issues. Works with senior management to support strategic planning and decision making. Can demonstrate a strong knowledge in a given subject matter (i.e. SME) in the designer’s discipline to the extent that other high level designers and/or SMEs in the same discipline can use the designer as an advisor regarding difficult/complex applications
- Applies extensive and unique subject matter expertise in the development of strategies or in the resolution of complex issues.
- Studies, evaluates and tests new or revised methodologies, best practices, tools, processes, procedures, and technology assessing potential fit, benefits, and impacts on projects.
- Anticipates issues, develops and drives new and innovative solutions to complex challenges/problems
- Routinely leads online and in-person internal and client meetings from the design side, and coordinates with external design subcontractors, surveyors, and designated client contacts for
- Design Standards clarification as needed, facilitated by the DD SME and Area Manager or Regional Director.
- Works autonomously on projects including extremely complex projects
PAY RANGE:
$50-64/hr depending on experience.
