This position is for Counsel or Senior Counsel, Data Privacy, based in Houston, Texas, reporting to the Supervising Counsel, Privacy and Cybersecurity. The Privacy and Cybersecurity Law Team houses Chevron’s privacy, cyber, and AI attorneys. This Counsel or Senior Counsel position will advise on data privacy legal matters and issues affecting Chevron globally. The ideal candidate will be proficient in this area of law and comfortable taking secondary responsibility for cybersecurity and AI legal advising, while also remaining open to supporting other Compliance Law matters as needed, including competition law.
- Provide day-to-day legal advice to all operating units globally on all aspects of data privacy compliance.
- Research and maintain current knowledge of applicable foreign (GDPR, LGPD, PIPL, PDPA, etc.), federal, and state data privacy laws (TDPSA, CCPA) and industry standards. Strong knowledge of U.S. privacy regulations required.
- Work closely with the Global Privacy Manager to support the maintenance of the enterprise data privacy program and to advise on privacy assessments / DPIAs.
- Provide legal advice on issues related to information technology initiatives, including data governance, information retention, data transfer, and AI initiatives.
- Support incident response processes for cyber and data privacy incidents including handling legal aspects of compliance with foreign and domestic laws regarding data breaches.
- Develop and deliver data privacy training to company personnel.
- Advise on legal compliance in connection with internal investigations and forensics requests.
- Advise on cyber regulations, AI regulations, and AI governance, as needed, globally.
- Licensed to practice law in Texas (other U.S. jurisdictions will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
- Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. University
- Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law
- Transactional experience in negotiating and drafting contracts
- Demonstrated experience advising clients in business, corporate, and transactional matters
- Proven client counseling skills in providing pragmatic day-to-day advice; informing clients of important legal developments, and warning clients of potential legal risks
- Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations in other legal compliance areas such as competition law; knowledgeable about effective compliance programs
