The Head of Commercial Analytics is a senior strategic role accountable for building and deploying high-integrity models, tools, and insights that inform ST&O trading decisions, scenario planning, and commercial performance optimization. The position oversees two complementary analytical disciplines – fundamental market & asset analysts and quantitative / data-science analysts – integrating their outputs into one coherent decision-support engine. By orchestrating structured analytics across paper and physical strategies, this leader guides desk-level activity through market intelligence, quantitative modeling, and data-driven stress testing. The role requires exceptional coordination across functional stakeholders, ensuring commercial alignment, data reliability, and enterprise-wide insight delivery.
- Lead a high-performing, dual‑track analytics organization – fundamental analysts and quantitative analysts – support ST&O trading desks with modeling, pricing tools, and decision frameworks across time, product, and geography.
- Prioritize modeling efforts based on margin impact, trading urgency, and user needs.
- Drive the development of structured models for pricing, exposure, margin attribution, and market stress testing.
- Decide model architecture and methodologies used in desk-facing tools and frameworks.
- Train commercial analysts and junior traders on model usage, application of insights, and scenario navigation.
- Operate and oversee development of advanced sensing tools and real-time data feeds to guide market outlooks, basis differentials, and forward margin positioning.
- Run scenario planning/stress tests to identify exposure under volatility and optimize trade structures under different market regimes.
- Align models with geo/time arbitrage dynamics, demand signals, and market fit for rack pricing, blending, and regrade planning.
- Embed forecasting logic with VCO and Refining teams to align assumptions around demand shifts, infrastructure utilization, and fuel specifications.
- Track key KPIs such as forecast vs. realized volume/margin, % of trades supported by either fundamental or quantitative tools, and trader satisfaction with analytic coverage.
- Ensure models reflect real-world logistics and asset constraints, coordinating inputs from tankage, storage, and scheduling platforms.
- Integrate asset characteristics and throughput capacity into scenario outputs - ensuring strategies are physically and commercially executable.
- Guide the operationalization of desk insights through timing, asset availability, and infrastructure fit assumptions.
- Translate model-based outcomes into structured risk and margin logic for integration with Middle Office governance.
- Disseminate analytic conclusions to Finance, Risk, and Planning with shared logic and consistent margin narratives.
- Partner with Credit, Risk, and Trading to align assumptions and incorporate counterparty behavior into commercial models.
- Serve as a cross-functional leader coordinating modeling priorities across Planning, VCO, Scheduling, and Market Intelligence functions.
- Work closely with IT on new model rollouts, tool performance monitoring, and data source governance.
- Collaborate with Trading Desks, VCO, and Value Chains to deliver models, align forecast logic, and integrate margin analytics with supply, demand, and planning strategies.
- Partner with Middle Office, MPLX & Logistics, and Refining to ensure alignment on exposure governance, storage and flow modeling, and margin stack analysis across product and asset systems.
- Champion a culture of precision, curiosity, and structured problem-solving in commercial analytics.
- Manage and mentor fundamental market analysts, quantitative/data‑science and tool development teams, fostering knowledge‑sharing and joint development of reusable toolkits.
- Institutionalize shared logic frameworks for use across commercial teams, ensuring transparency and traceability of assumptions.
- Embed analytics as a core enabler of value creation within trading and physical supply decisions.
- Required: 10+ years in commercial analytics, trading risk modeling, or quantitative energy markets strategy.
- Preferred: At least 7 years in senior commercial analytics leadership with exposure to supporting asset-backed and merchant trading portfolios.
- Preferred: Expertise in building and operationalizing pricing, margin, and exposure models for trading or supply chain environments. Deep familiarity with fundamental market signals, competitor behavior, and real-time data integration.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional modeling efforts across trading desks, logistics, finance, and technology.
- Strong knowledge of asset capabilities, infrastructure bottlenecks, and margin stack decomposition in refining and logistics systems.
