Position Summary:
The Building Products Compliance Engineer ensures that all manufactured steel building products, as well as third-party manufactured and distributed products, comply with applicable legal, regulatory, and industry standards across North America and globally. This role requires excellent product knowledge and involves analyzing technical data, interpreting codes and standards, and collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to embed compliance throughout the entire product lifecycle—from development to application—while maintaining accurate documentation and certification.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Product Compliance and Regulatory Oversight - Ensure all products meet applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements by managing compliance systems, monitoring standard updates, and coordinating engineering change approvals.
2. Product Testing and Certification Management - Lead the development and execution of test plans, collaborate with third-party certifiers and labs, and manage certification processes and performance data for domestic and international markets.
3. Compliance Documentation and Cross-Functional Integration - Maintain accurate technical documentation and compliance procedures, support internal audits, and collaborate across departments to embed compliance into product development, marketing, and manufacturing workflows.
Major Responsibilities
•Ensure products meet all relevant building codes, standards, and best practices, maintain data integrity across compliance systems in accordance with ISO 37301, ISO 9001, and engineering regulations.
•Apply excellent product knowledge to proactively identify compliance risks and opportunities throughout the product lifecycle.
•Oversee and manage engineering change requests requests from approval to implementation.
•Work with regulatory authorities and standards organizations (e.g., ASTM, ISO, CSA), monitoring changes to standards and proactively updating product compliance strategies.
•Develop and oversee product test plans, coordinate product testing activities, and oversee implementation of certification labeling and publication of the performance data.
•Collaborate with accredited laboratories, third-party certifiers, and certification bodies (e.g., ULC/UL, CCMC, Miami Dade, Factory Mutual, Intertek) to secure certifications across North American and global markets.
•Ensure accurate documentation and record-keeping for all testing and certification results
•Develop and maintain comprehensive product documentation including production drawings, specifications, installation guidelines, test reports, and certifications.
•Develop, implement, and regularly update product compliance procedures, checklists, and internal guidelines.
•Manage controlled document management systems, ensuring version control, traceability, and secure access, and support the integration and enhancement of Product Information Management (PIM) systems.
•Assist with internal compliance audits and support internal teams during external audits by certification bodies or regulatory agencies.
•Collaborate effectively with product development, engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to integrate compliance requirements into product design and manufacturing processes.
•Provide technical support to marketing and sales teams to ensure product claims are substantiated and meet advertising standards.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, Applied Science, or a closely related technical field.
•Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or actively pursuing it. Job title and responsibilities may be adjusted based on qualifications.
•Minimum of 3 years’ experience in building design, compliance engineering, or the building products/construction industry with strong emphasis on technical documentation, testing and certification.
•Proven ability to prepare, review, and interpret technical documents including engineering reports, product certifications, test plans, and compliance manuals.
•Solid understanding of product certification processes, testing protocols, and regulatory requirements within the building industry.
•Strong expertise in Canadian building codes and industry standards, including but not limited to ASTM, ISO, CSA, and ULC.
•Working knowledge of major US building codes and standards, including ASCE 7, IBC, IRC, FBC, and CBC.
•Familiarity with cold-formed steel design standards CSA-S136 and/or AISI-S100.
•Project management skills, with experience leading projects to successful completion on time and within scope.
•Strong technical writing and communication skills, with experience preparing documentation for certification bodies and collaborating across departments and with external regulatory agencies.
•Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills to manage document control and multiple priorities efficiently.
•Proficient in compliance and document management software such as Bluebeam Revu, Autodesk AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), SharePoint and project management tools like Microsoft Project.
•Bilingual in French and English is an advantage.
