We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our team. This role is intended for an engineer with real-world field and commissioning experience, not an entry-level or quality-control-focused position. The ideal candidate is technically strong, professional, and comfortable leading automation efforts in high-pressure commissioning environments.
This position supports projects nationwide and requires travel within the continental United States for on-site commissioning activities.
- Develop, program, and commission PLC and HMI systems in accordance with project specifications
- Lead and support on-site startup and commissioning activities, typically lasting 30 days or less
- Perform loop checks, point-to-point testing, and verification of PLC I/O
- Troubleshoot live automation systems and resolve issues efficiently and safely
- Develop and maintain I/O lists, cause and effect diagrams, and control narratives
- Produce redline documentation and support creation of as-built drawings
- Develop engineering sketches and provide direction to field electricians
- Read and interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs
- Apply knowledge of three-phase power systems, including 480V, 5kV, and 15kV class systems (controls interface)
- Adhere to applicable industry codes and standards, including NFPA 70, IEEE, and API
- Support instrumentation, VFD commissioning, and industrial networking as required
- Willingness and ability to travel for commissioning activities
- Typical trips are 30 days or less
- Estimated travel requirement is approximately 50%
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Controls, Automation, or related discipline)
- 3+ years of industrial automation engineering experience- Hands-on experience with PLC and HMI programming (Rockwell / Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar)
- Field commissioning experience is required
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in field environments
- Experience in RNG, biogas, wastewater, power generation, or industrial process facilities
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
- Experience with:
- VFD commissioning
- Instrument startup and calibration
- Cellular, fiber, copper, or VSAT industrial networking
- SCADA and remote monitoring systems
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Clear and professional communication with internal teams and clients
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality and safety
- Ability to manage time effectively while working remotely or on-site
