RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Leads the delivery of legal services in the areas of litigation and wildfire risk mitigation and/or has direct reports as part of the functional area leadership role.
•Provides legal guidance to the executive team and other departments on litigation and wildfire-related matters.
•Represents the company's interests or manages outside counsel representing the Company in court, arbitration, and other legal proceedings.
•Drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts, especially those related to litigation or potential disputes.
•Conducts internal investigations related to potential litigation matters.
•Develops specialization and provides services in one or more legal areas having primary or particular impact on the Company, specifically wildfire liability and risk mitigation.
•Assists management with the development of wildfire mitigation plans.
•Assists management or assumes responsibility for assuring compliance with rules, regulations and procedures affecting the Company as a regulated industry.
•Assists management in formulating policies and instituting programs conforming to specific legal or regulatory criteria.
•Represents Company in administrative agency proceedings consistent with a specific area of acquired specialization.
•Performs legal research to assist in formulating Company position with regard to legal matters or where a legal issue has significant impact on Company’s position.
•Assists outside counsel in representing Company in complex administrative or legal proceedings.
•Provides basic quasi-legal training to other departments to facilitate an understanding of the total legal responsibilities impacting on that department in the context of Company operations.
•Completes the necessary continuing legal education requirements to maintain licensed legal status.
•Responsible for providing legal services and/or working in conjunction with outside counsel to provide the necessary legal services to all elements of the Company including the various operational departments and to upper/middle and top management.
•The legal services provided include a broad range of preventative, remedial and initiating actions in response to the needs of the Company requiring application of reasoned judgment derived from objective consideration of relevant facts and applicable legal/regulatory principles.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
•Bachelor’s Degree PLUS professional degree, Juris Doctor or equivalent, and licensed to practice in one or more states.
•If the candidate is not currently licensed in Minnesota, the candidate will be required to seek admission to the Minnesota State Bar upon hire.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
•9 years or more experience as an attorney with satisfactory work performance.
•This position level may require special authorization from the general council.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
•This position will report to Duluth, MN.
•Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
•This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
•The expected annual compensation range for this position is $164,222 - $205,777. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions.
