Associate Director, Southeast Region

Job Summary

Assistant to the region director involved in planning and developing all aspects of the office’s activities where assistance is requested or assignment is delegated. Works with and assists the region director in executing programs to influence issues of concern to industry including; regulatory, local government and federal matters. Works to build partnerships with relevant state, local and federal officials.

Duties/Responsibilities

- Under the supervision of the region director, manage assigned regulatory and legislative issues.

- Anticipate and identify emerging and potential issues impacting the natural gas and petroleum industry; plans, develops and executes programs or activities to address these issues on behalf of member companies.

- Provides leadership in the development of the natural gas and petroleum industry’s regulatory & local government priorities for the state. Keeps fully informed of the industry’s priorities on federal issues and works with the region director to ensure the office’s activities meet these priorities.

- Works with the region director to keep the appropriate advisory committees and members of the regional working group, and other interested company personnel informed on matters of interest and ensure the appropriate input is solicited to maintain effective management of these matters.

- Develops and maintains close cooperative relationships with a wide variety of allied businesses, industries, and other key constituencies with interests similar to the natural gas and petroleum industry; provides the leadership in development of ad hoc coalitions among these constituencies to carry out programs of mutual interests.

- Assists region director in managing the activities and operation of the region office and assumes an agreed upon leadership role in the absence of the region director.

- Cultivates good working relationships with legislators and legislative staff, regulatory agencies, and other government officials, including where relevant county commissioners, city council members, planning staff, etc.

- Under the supervision of the region director, assist in the preparation of the weekly report to members, testimony, data, position papers, presentations, and other appropriate communications to promote the position of the industry on issues before the legislature and regulatory agencies.

Key Relationships

- Manages issues assigned by the region director including taking a leadership role in organizing and leading specific council advisory committees, the regional working group, and allied organizations

- Requires a close relationship with API staff and industry personnel, government officials, key private sector constituencies, professional and non-profit organizations, the media and others.

- Supervisory responsibilities are determined by the region director.

Qualifications

- Require 7-10 years of experience in a similar role and subject matter expertise.

- Bachelor's degree in relevant area, or other related field equivalent work experience.

- Requires a working knowledge of the operations of state and local government.

- Understanding of the petroleum industry is preferred.

- Excellent written, oral, and analytical skills are required.

Physical Requirements

- Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer

- Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc. on occasion

- Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines

- Transport items and equipment up to 10 lbs. on occasion

Travel Requirements

- Up to 25%

Percentage of travel time expected for the position, where the travel occurs, such as locally or in specific countries or states, and whether the travel is overnight.
