Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Plant Manager to oversee daily operations and maintenance at a central energy plant supplying steam, hot water, chilled water, electrical distribution, and backup generation assets. The role involves managing O&M staff, contractors, and vendors to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance. The Assistant Plant Manager also supports long-term planning, outage management, and continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead daily operation and maintenance of energy assets including turbines, generators, HRSGs, chillers, cooling towers, and electrical systems.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Supervise and develop O&M staff, including scheduling, training, and performance reviews.
- Support outage planning, capital projects, and long-term reliability initiatives.
- Collaborate with Plant Manager on budgets, cost optimization, and performance metrics.
- Investigate operating issues, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement.
- Oversee contractors, vendors, and site activities to ensure compliance and quality of work.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree preferred.
- 8+ years of supervisory or managerial experience in a cogeneration or power plant environment with a union workforce.- Strong knowledge of plant operations, generating equipment, boilers, water treatment, and maintenance practices.
- Experience with planning, scheduling, and budgeting in an operations setting.
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work irregular hours, participate in outages, and perform under plant conditions.
- Must be able to meet physical requirements, including confined space entry, lifting, and use of protective equipment.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree preferred.
