The Assistant Controller oversees the organization’s critical accounting processes, internal control compliance, and submission of consolidated information to Corporate. The Assistant Controller is also responsible for keeping the organization’s financial systems up-to-date with current financial information, and has a key role in ensuring that all accounting is done in compliance with IFRS and the established internal control framework.
What you’ll do:
•Prepare all monthly financial reports required to be filed with Corporate, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, net working capital, tax files, interest expenses and quarterly disclosure notes.
•Prepare monthly and quarterly variance analysis reports for the designated sub-divisions, comparting to forecast and budget with the focal point of supporting decision making and forward looking activities.
•Lead month-end close activities – reviewing journal entries; reconcile intercompany balances with the counterparty; upload trial balance into Hyperion, verifying for mapping and accuracy issues.
•Create and maintain all mapping and reporting within the accounting / financial systems including:
•Updating all mapping as new locations or departments are added or removed;
•Maintaining chart of accounts in general ledger;
•Reconciling regional or departmental P&Ls to the consolidated P&L, investigating variances and recommending appropriate corrective action; and
•Creating monthly reporting for the Controller to use in the analysis of monthly income statement and balance sheet results.
•Assist with the preparation and upload of budget and forecast updates.
•Coordinate documentation, testing and remediation of internal controls, and maintain appropriate documentation for CSOX certification.
•Coordinate the preparation of and oversee the review of balance sheet account reconciliations on a monthly basis, including for operations in remote locations.
•Perform technical research at the direction of the Controller to support the implementation of new accounting standards or the accounting for new transactions or business activities.
•Act as a liaison with external auditors during quarterly and year-end reviews and assists with the preparation of quarterly review and year-end audit documentation.
•Work with the Risk Group to understand and analyze the presentation of financial instruments balances on a monthly basis.
•Assist Marketing as required in analyzing profitability and margins.
•Assist Executive Management in analyzing profitability by line of business.
•Assist with due diligence of potential acquisition targets and post-acquisition integration.
•Respond to requests for information from Government Agencies (eg Stats Canada)
•Complete special projects and performs other duties, as required.
What you bring:
•Post-secondary education in accounting and finance
•CPA designation with 2-5 years post-designation experience
•Experience in a financial reporting role would be considered an asset
•Experience in preparing journal entries, account reconciliations and financial statements
•Strong computer skills, including MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook). Knowledge of Hyperion, Workday and RightAngle is preferred, but not required
•Strong analytical skills, including the ability to reconcile multiple data sources, and assess a set of data for variances
•Strong, clear and persuasive communication skills, both oral & written. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface with all levels of management
•Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
•Strong attention to detail
