About This Job

The Walnut Creek Coal Mine is a prominent surface coal mine featuring state-of-the-art equipment, including an 80-cubic-yard dragline, a 29-cubic-yard mass excavator, a 24-cubic-yard hydraulic backhoe, and a fleet of 150-ton end-dump trucks. The Walnut Creek Mine is a captive lignite operation with an impressive capacity, producing over 2 million tons of lignite annually. Additionally, the mine operates a blending program to ensure consistent quality lignite for fueling a 308-megawatt power plant.

Opportunity Summary

The Warehouse Specialist is central to the efficient management of warehouse, and inventory control at a coal mining operation. This role involves reviewing purchase requisitions, vendor data, and inventory maintenance using CMMS software. The Warehouse Specialist also plays a key role in maintaining supplier relationships, negotiating orders, ensuring timely deliveries, and optimizing procurement processes. Additionally, this role will provide essential light maintenance support to maintenance personnel on an as-needed basis, with particular attention to the materials and equipment specific to coal mining operations.

Your scope of responsibility as Warehouse Specialist includes the following primary functions:

Warehouse Operations

- Assist in overseeing all warehouse functions including receiving, storage, organization, and distribution of spare parts, consumables, coal handling equipment components, chemicals, safety gear, and mining materials to support continuous operations.

- Assist in maintaining inventory tracking systems, conduct regular cycle counts, and perform full physical inventories to ensure accuracy and prevent shortages or overstock.

- Assist in optimizing warehouse layout, storage methods, and equipment used to improve space efficiency and access to materials, including coal handling systems such as conveyors, feeders, crushers, and dust collection equipment.

- Assist in managing logistics for inbound and outbound shipments, coordinating with suppliers, carriers, and internal teams—to ensure timely receipt and distribution.

- Assist in pursuing ongoing process improvements to boost efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve preparedness for scheduled or emergency maintenance.

- Operate material handling equipment such as forklifts, trucks, and cranes safely and in accordance with site policies.

- Provide support for additional routine and non-routine tasks and projects as needed.

CMMS Utilization, Maintenance Support & Compliance

- Learn how to use CMMS to manage procurement workflows—requisitions, purchase orders, vendor management, receipts, and invoices—while maintaining accurate data for inventory, assets, and reporting.

- Work with cross-functional teams to optimize CMMS settings and support upgrades that improve supply chain and operational efficiency.

- Support Maintenance by delivering tools, parts, and materials for planned and emergency work, assisting with light tasks, and preparing parts kits.

- Maintain stock of critical spares and consumables to ensure mining equipment reliability.

- Assist with audits, surveys, and data requests related to inventory, procurement, and supply chain.

- Ensure warehouse operations follow policies, regulations, and safety protocols, particularly those related to hazardous material handling.

NAES Safe

Safety is a core value at NAES, and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to remain mentally alert and work safely at all times. Employees must also adhere to all safety warnings and posted signs while on company property. Additionally, they are required to follow all NAES safety rules and procedures. Adherence to these safety responsibilities is one of the key factors in the evaluation of each employee’s performance.

Working Relationships

The Warehouse Specialist reports to the Administrative Supervisor, takes general direction from plant management and coordinates with all other plant personnel as needed in support of the daily operation of the plant.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods on uneven, rough, or inclined surfaces; climbing stairs, ladders, and equipment; and working from elevated platforms or confined locations at varying heights. Frequent lifting, carrying, and maneuvering of materials or tools weighing up to 50 pounds is expected.

Coal mining environment will involve working in a surface mine setting, which can include confined spaces, low-clearance areas, or restricted pathways. Tasks may require crawling, kneeling, or stooping in tight quarters. Exposure to coal dust, fumes, vibration, high noise levels, moisture, extreme temperatures, and low-light conditions is common. Work may also take place in remote or outdoor settings where weather conditions can change, such as supervising the unloading of fuel and oil trucks at the fuel island.

Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and may include hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, steel-toed boots, respiratory protection (air-purifying or supplied-air respirators), hearing protection, gloves (including hot and cut-resistant), flame-resistant clothing (FRC), and fall protection harnesses. Respirator fit testing may be required. Strict no-smoking policies apply in and around the mine site and designated work zones.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The regular work schedule follows a Monday through Friday workweek during standard day shift hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $20.05 to $28.08 per hour.
