Under the direction of the Tool and Die Supervisor, works from plots to plan and perform the work required to construct and troubleshoot metal forms (dies) which are used in manufacturing precision metal parts.
Possess the ability to read plots, basic mathematical ability
Working knowledge of metric measuring system, calipers, micrometers, and dial gauges
Graduate of a two year course in basic machining
One or more years of experience in machine shop and/or die making
Possesses the ability to perform basic functions on a computer
Selects material to be used as designated by blueprint; making initial cut
Measures steel plate and bars that will be cut to form parts of the final die; keeping an accurate inventory of stocked material
Sets band saw machine to proper position to cut material to the necessary size
Face mills and squares material to a precise measurement using a vertical milling machine and other needed measuring devices to set parts at right angles to the milling head
Manually adjusts vise to hold exact position of part: (utilizing a digital read out) sets quill or knee to proper depth to be milled
Face mills material to an accurate measurement using a vertical numerical controlled milling machine
Positions material to be milled on magnetic table of machine using measuring devices as needed, ensuring material is lying flat and not warped or lying on metal chips
Manually programs machine for milling, per specified instructions
Operates grinder to achieve a precision ground surface on the die plates
Positions part on magnetic table ensuring the part is secure and not lying on debris
Sets the grinding wheel to proper depth of cut, measures plates with micrometer to assure precise thickness is acquired
When process is complete, cleans part and work area.
Programs/operates a computerized machining center which bores, mills, taps, etc., by utilizing a program tape from the CAD/CAM system
Arranges materials to be processed and makes necessary adjustments to program
While CNC is in operation, observes to detect potential errors or problems, making corrections as needed
Programs/operates a computerized machine that electronically discharges parts in a multitude of shapes to absolute measurements
Arranges part to be machined on EDM table using measuring devices as needed
Utilizes program tape from CAD/CAM system to operate machine
While EDM is in operation, observes process to ensure accuracy
Adjusts controls on oven to heat material to approximately 1700 degrees Fahrenheit or 930 degrees Celsius
Prepares material for heat treatment by ensuring all previous machining as indicated on blueprint has been completed
Places material in oven and secures oven door
Sets oven controls according to material type and hardness required
When heat treatment is complete, submerses part in coolant or air cools parts. Cryogenic processing may be used
Assembles dies according to blueprint and cut sheet instructions; ensuring all bolts, screws, pins, etc. are collected
Modifies dies sent from outside sources to fit Oneda Corporation presses
Maintains inventory of hardware and orders supplies as needed, following appropriate policies and procedures
Ensures all machines are cleaned of debris, coolant, and material at the completion of use
Performs a preventative maintenance on all shop machines daily, to include checking lubricants and fluid levels
Completes all appropriate documentation throughout the production process
Occasionally operates lathe, radial drill press, bench drill press, drill/tool sharpener and press machines
Possesses the knowledge of quality, environmental, and company policies and procedures; ensuring all products are produced efficiently and effectively to meet the established requirements.
Required to work in a sitting or standing position, on a hard surface, for extended periods of time. Will be required to stoop, bend, and lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.). Required to complete some reading and computer work. Vision requirement minimum is 20/40 near and distant ( with or without corrective lens).
Wears safety shoes, glasses, gloves (as required/desired), and ear plugs while in the production area, this includes the die shop and warehouse. Appropriate protective equipment will be worn while operating the forklift.
Works inside of a temperature controlled plant where there is a great deal of noise from presses. The work will be dusty, dirty, and greasy. Will be exposed to sharp edged materials and chemicals in oil.
