We are currently hiring a Temporary Contract Payroll Administrator to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine located in Goderich, Ontario. This is a 2-month contract position. This is on-site position. No hybrid or remote work available.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.
Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM?
Reporting to the Controller, this position will support a broad range of payroll and finance administrative functions. This role supports the Finance team, playing a key part in ensuring accurate payroll processing and timely financial support. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, demonstrates strong discretion and accuracy.
- Support the Goderich Mine operations in the preparation and processing of hourly payroll in accordance with federal and provincial legislation and collective agreement.
- Maintain accurate employee records in payroll and HRIS systems (UKG Pro).
- Review and reconcile timecards, shift differentials, and leave balances.
- Response to employee inquires related to pay and time tracking.
- Generate payroll reports and support year-end T4 and ROE submissions.
- Assist with the preparation and processing of bi-weekly payroll for employees in compliance with the provincial legislation and the collective agreement.
- Enter and validate employee data into UKG Pro.
- Verify timecards and attendance.
- Respond to employee inquiries related to payroll, pay statements, and deduction in a timely and professional manner
- Support the reconciliation of payroll data across system platforms, and assist with auditing for accuracy
- Maintain confidential payroll records and filing systems
- Support Goderich Mine operations in the assistance with accounts payable and receivable tasks, including invoice processing, expense report review and coding.
- Reconcile generate ledger accounts and support month-end closing activities.
- Provide support in preparing finance statements, reports, and audits as needed
- Maintain organized financial and payroll documentation in compliance with internal controls.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?
- Minimum 3-5 years of combined experience in payroll, accounting, or administration
- Previous experience in payroll administration or a related administrative role is preferred
- Experience with payroll systems (i.e. UKG Pro and UKG Workforce Management) is considered an asset
- Experience with JD Edwards, Coupa is considered an asset
- Working knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, CRA reporting requirements, and employment standards.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent numerical accuracy
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage tasks within tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
- Preferred Assets
o Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification
o Experience working within a unionized environment and interpreting collective agreement
- This is a Monday-Friday position.
