Rossdale Water Treatment Plant – Edmonton, AB



EPCOR is seeking a


Technologist,

Engineering to support water main rehabilitation and replacement programs. In this role, you’ll be responsible for:

- Conducting hydraulic network analysis

- Running GIS queries and reviewing as-built drawings

- Performing field investigations

- Designing water main replacement projects (up to 3-month timelines)

What you’d be responsible for


Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Design Services, the Technologist, Engineering works within established guidelines to support the planning, design, and execution of water infrastructure projects.


- Strategic & Operational Support

- Contribute to pipe asset engineering plans and maintain effective working relationships across teams.

- Deliver high-quality results aligned with performance metrics and project goals.

- GIS & Data Analysis

- Design and run GIS queries to support capital project selection.

- Use GIS software (e.g., MicroStation, ArcGIS) to create and update data files, thematic maps, and project coordination visuals.

- Support documentation, analysis, and customer communications through GIS outputs.

- Hydraulic Modeling

- Conduct project-specific and supervised


neighbourhood

-wide hydraulic analysis to determine optimal water main sizing and alignment.

- Ensure fire protection, peak demand capacity, and unidirectional flushing capabilities.

- Maintain water quality through looping, dead-end elimination, and appropriate pipe sizing.

- Confirm construction isolations do not compromise system pressure or fire protection.

- Design & Field Investigations

- Design water main upgrades and replacements that are constructible, cost-effective, and enhance system reliability.

- Verify base plans and as-built data for accuracy.

- Identify and resolve potential conflicts with utilities, landscaping, and private property through field investigations.

- Evaluate alternatives such as abandonment, relocation, slip lining, and trenchless technologies.

- Recommend project extensions to reduce future customer impacts and improve efficiency.

- Optimize appurtenance placement for long-term operations and maintenance.

- Ensure designs meet EPCOR standards before requesting drafting support.

- Under engineer supervision, design cathodic protection systems (impressed current and galvanic anodes) in accordance with NACE standards.

- Design Review & Coordination

- Review construction drawings for accuracy and completeness prior to submission.

- Assess external utility designs through the City’s Utility Line Assignment process to prevent conflicts with EPCOR infrastructure.

- Review consultant designs for compliance with EPCOR’s Design and Construction Standards.

- Cross-Functional Support

- Provide technical support to internal teams and external stakeholders on hydraulic analysis, GIS queries, water main design, and utility coordination.

- Assist the wastewater inspection assessment team with:

- Renaming service televising videos (STVs) and creating inspection tasks.

- Converting private development as-built data into DRAINS asset values.

- Updating asset inventory attributes using field-collected inspection data.

What’s required to be successful


- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution.

- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in water main construction, inspection, and design.

- Note: Candidates with at least 2 years of relevant experience may be considered for a developmental-level appointment if they meet the educational requirements.

- Registration with ASET as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) is considered an asset.

- Strong understanding of hydraulic principles related to distribution system design, including experience with hydraulic modeling or simulation software.

- Solid knowledge of design and construction standards for potable water systems in northern climates.

- Proficiency in GIS and related applications commonly used in water utility environments.

- Familiarity with basic programming languages and query development.

- Skilled

in standard software tools including Excel, Access, Word, and SharePoint.

- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.

- High attention to detail and accuracy.
