Hourly position directly responsible for the execution of facility maintenance and testing activities in high-voltage transmission substations. The position can either have an emphasis on relays or substation equipment but will require work in both areas. The Technician will be able to perform basic tasks associated with system equipment repair and maintenance as well as provide technical assistance and oversight to contractors. Maintenance and testing activities include but not limited to air switches, Sf6 circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, relays, meters, SCADA, battery banks, and telecom. Will be required to comply with all company safety rules and procedures and be responsible for WETT-provided tools, test equipment, and vehicles. It would be preferred that the Technician would have a minimum of 5 years of continuous experience in a related field. The Technician will be responsible for the safety and work quality of the contract crews and proper tracking and reporting of completed job units to the WETT Field Operations Supervisor. This position is for work in the Big Spring, TX and surrounding area.
- Responsible for either directly performing or overseeing contractors performing the following work associated with all relay and substation equipment:
- Installation
- Maintenance
- Testing
- Adjusting
- Troubleshooting
- Repairs
- Switching
- Safely operate various types of equipment, bucket truck, aerial lift, skid steer, forklifts, etc.
- Ability to use multi-meter to troubleshoot electrical problems.
- Ability to read and decipher electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Responsible for maintaining WETT vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working conditions
- Perform diagnostic testing and analysis of test results on protection and control, and substation equipment.
- Check, verify, and prepare routine reports.
- Employees shall comply with WETT safety and environmental policies.
- Associate’s degree in an electrical field is preferred, sufficient work experience may take the place of a degree.
- Must have at least 2 years of work experience at a professional level in substation maintenance testing and/or commissioning which demonstrates a progressive development of competence. Other previous work in a related field may be sufficient.
- Maintenance position levels I, II, and III (Senior) progression based on relative years of experience, competency, leadership skills, and overall knowledge of job requirements.
- Ability to lead, coach, and train other technicians.
- Ability to adapt to changing technology.
- Ability to work outside in an electrical substation environment, exposure to heat and cold, climbing stairs and ladders, and working in elevated areas.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with changing priorities.
- Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work independently and with others.
- Willing to work overtime or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
- Willing to participate in an on-call rotation.
- Capable of following WETT safety rules and policies.
- Preferred to have knowledge of maintenance standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
- Must be capable of working in close proximity to energized substation and transmission line equipment.
- Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
- Ability to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three-line diagrams.
- Preferred to have proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
- Able to oversee contractors to ensure that personnel are working safely and are in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and state regulations.
- Ability to interface professionally with contractors, designers, vendors, and other parties connected with the project.
- Preferred to have a working knowledge of substation equipment and the ability to operate substation equipment as directed by the WETT operations group.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel preferred
- Knowledge of SEL, and GE relay software, and various test software such as Doble.
- Knowledge of various test equipment including Doble, Megger, etc.
