Department Description
The Forecast and Outage Coordination applications team is one of ISO New England's core market support teams. The group is responsible for maintaining and enhancing applications that support load forecasting and outage coordination, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the region's power system operations.
What You’ll be Working On
We are seeking a motivated and analytical Data Science Intern to contribute to the enhancement of our forecast blending process. The intern will explore advanced statistical approaches, persistence-based strategies, and the integration of AI and machine learning techniques to improve forecast accuracy. This is an opportunity to apply technical skills to real-world forecasting challenges and deliver work that will directly support ISO's mission of reliable power system operations.
What You'll Do
- Research and evaluate statistical, machine learning, and persistence-based forecasting methods.
- Apply time series analysis to improve four class blending processes.
- Explore enhancements to solar PV forecast blending mechanisms and persistence strategies.
- Use programming tools (Python, NumPy, Pandas or R )for data manipulation and model development.
- Test and evaluate models using industry standard metrics (MAE, RMSE, MAPE, etc.)
- Collaborate with experienced staff on production-level workflows and model evaluation
- processes.

You'll play a key role in helping the team produce accurate energy forecasts and coordinate system outages. Your work will directly support reliable and efficient energy operations, giving you hands-on experience and data analysis, predictive modeling in real-world decision-making that keeps the grid running smoothly period
What We Look For in a Candidate
- Strong foundation in statistics, time series analysis, and machine learning.
- Experience with Python (NumPy, Pandas, ect) or R.
- Familiarity with forecasting models and performance metrics Mae, RMSE, and MAPE.
- Strong analytical problem-solving and communication skills.
- A motivated self-starter with a passion for applying data science to energy systems.
- Hands-on experience tackling real-world forecasting challenges.
- Exposure to production-level modeling and evaluation workflows.
- Mentorship from experienced domain experts in forecasting and market support.
