Position Specific Description
NextEra Energy is seeking a motivated Data Engineer Intern to join our dynamic data analytics team. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with modern data engineering technologies including Python, SQL, AWS cloud services, and data visualization tools. The ideal candidate will have a passion for data and technology, with a strong foundation in programming and database concepts. You will work closely with senior engineers to build and maintain data pipelines, support ETL processes, and contribute to business intelligence initiatives.
Key Responsibilities Data Collection & Integration:
- Assist in collecting, cleaning, and integrating data from various sources into our data warehouse
- Support the development and maintenance of ETL processes using AWS services such as S3, Lambda, and Glue
- Collaborate with team members to understand data requirements and contribute to data collection processes
- Help integrate various data sources into our Redshift data warehouse and data lake architecture
- Support database design, implementation, and maintenance activities using PostgreSQL and SQL Server
- Assist in optimizing SQL queries for performance and reliability
- Help ensure data quality and integrity throughout the ETL lifecycle with enterprise security protocols
- Contribute to data governance initiatives and maintain high data standards
- Participate in creating data models, schemas, and technical documentation
- Assist in generating data reports and visualizations using Power BI and other tools
- Support business intelligence activities and dashboard development
- Help create and maintain data flows for various business processes
- Perform data quality checks and validation procedures
- Contribute to API development and integration projects using Python and Flask
- Aid in code releases through version control systems like Git
- Document technical specifications and development processes
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and deliver data solutions
- Participate in code reviews and testing procedures
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Engineering, IT, or related field
- Strong foundation in Python programming
- Solid understanding of SQL and database technologies (PostgreSQL, SQL Server)
- Basic knowledge of AWS cloud services, particularly Redshift, S3, Lambda, and Glue
- Understanding of ETL processes and data pipeline concepts
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to data quality
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies
- Experience with Power BI for data visualization and reporting
- Familiarity with Flask web framework
- Basic understanding of React for front-end development
- Knowledge of API development and integration
- Experience with Git version control processes
- Understanding of NoSQL databases
- Familiarity with data integration tools and methodologies
- Previous internship or project experience in data engineering or analytics
- Knowledge of additional data visualization tools (Plotly, Quarto, Streamlit)
- Understanding of data governance and security protocols
- Experience with automated testing frameworks
- Familiarity with agile development methodologies

To be considered for an internship, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also have a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher (on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale).
Job Duties & Responsibilities

- Completes challenging projects and assignments
- Presents final project to senior leadership at the end of the internship
- Assumes responsibility for own travel, lodging, and transportation necessary to be available for the program
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
