Staking Technician

We are seeking a Staking Technician (apprentice to journeyman level) to join our Engineering team, but we aren't looking for just anyone. SEC Staking Technicians are responsible for performing the required work related to staking, inspection, and advice for the construction, relocation, maintenance, operating and service of distribution lines and wiring to or on members' premises. They also handle special projects, system improvement projects, and work plan design in addition to general service requests.

For applicants with limited experience, through on-the-job experience and the completion of the three-year Apprentice Staking Technician training program, you will acquire the job skills necessary to perform the following job functions. Experienced staking technicians will be able to perform these tasks with minimal training.

- Meet with members and landowners to determine most efficient placement of poles, lines, and other parts of the electrical system.

- Stake and draft new overhead/underground constructions, conversions, and relocation of lines per RUS specifications.

- Prepare staking sheets in accordance with RUS guidelines.

- Enter all new construction and system changes into the Geographic Information System (GIS) including electric and land base items.

- Assign location specific data to new electric accounts.

- Operate laser ranging equipment to confirm and/or modify new/existing roadway, water, wire line or rail line crossing clearances.

- Enter all necessary data into the Customer Information System (CIS) for proper account setup and billing.

- Create necessary work orders using the Work Order system and apply necessary job tracking for other departments to follow job construction.

- Enter all materials into the Material Handling System for proper inventory control and job accounting.

- Work to secure all necessary easements, federal/state/local permits and other special purpose land use agreements for new construction.

- Calculate line extension costs and prepare line extension summaries as necessary for proper billing.

- Calculate line relocation costs and prepare repayment agreements as necessary.

- Calculate underground cost summaries and prepare necessary documentation for proper accounting.

- Calculate subdivision estimates and create necessary contractor payment summaries. Coordinate subdivision reimbursements with the contractor and System Engineer.

- Collect and review three-phase service load request forms. Develop proper service design based on load data presented.

- Prepare three-phase contracts as necessary.

- Calculate available fault currents based on service configuration and provide data to member as necessary.

- Conduct field inspections with Utilities for joint use attachments.

- Perform system improvement and work plan designs for any assigned improvement projects.

- Coordinate various payment options (bonds, letters of credit) between development contractors and System Engineer.

- Coordinate staking and construction aspects of large projects to ensure proper job execution as negotiated with members and landowners.

- Negotiate and/or act as Cooperative representative in special purpose local/state/federal jobs (VDOT, Fort Pickett).
