Job Summary:
The Sr. Wind Performance Engineer supports the Project Development and Execution teams by completing pre-construction Wind Energy Resource Assessments (WERAs), overseeing MET tower deployment and data collection, optimizing project turbine layouts to maximize project returns, and coordinating with independent engineers to secure project financing. The Wind Performance Engineer ensures development and execution projects meet Leeward’s technical and commercial requirements while maintaining its long-term ownership focus. The position requires experience with wind generation system design, wind resource evaluation, and wind project construction and commissioning.
Responsibilities:
- Perform wind Energy Yield Assessments (EYAs) needed to support LRE’s Development and Execution projects
- Provide feedback on wind Energy Yield Assessments (EYAs) created by third-party stakeholders such as Independent Engineers, third-party consultants, and EPCs
- Ability to understand wind energy modelling inputs to refine assumptions and optimize generation.
- Ability to identify and select the best wind technology based on a project site’s technical specifications.
- Ability to analyze wind resource data to select the most representative for the project site.
- Oversee ground campaign collection and wind resource tuning processes.
- Performs comprehensive energy analysis for operating wind plants to track performance against preconstruction estimates
- 4-Year Bachelors Engineering Degree
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to clearly communicate ideas succinctly to a non-technical audience.
- Ability to remain focused and reliable in completing tasks and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and manage technical projects, including interaction with outside vendors.
- Understanding of wind plant design and typical losses associated with equipment and system design.
- Demonstrated ability to manage priorities in a complex and dynamic environment.
- Minimum 8 years of technical work experience in an engineering discipline
- Minimum 5 years of relevant technical experience in wind resource/energy prediction.
- Professional Engineer license
- Significant expertise with wind generation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling software such as windPRO, openWind, and WAsP
- Familiarity with International Standard IEC 61400-12 and associated wind design and performance standards
- Demonstrated ability to complete noise and shadow flicker analysis
- Demonstrated ability to perform obstacle and terrain analysis to define power curve testing requirements
- Demonstrated ability to perform wind turbine power curve analysis
- Knowledge of Python, MATLAB, R or other code-based analysis tools
- Ability to implement and manage MET campaign data collection either through the use of temporary MET Towers or LIDAR
- Position will require sitting for long periods of time as well as occasionally lifting up to twenty-pound boxes
