SOLON Corporation is a leading provider of large commercial and utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions in the Southwest United States. We are seeking an experienced solar Service Technician/Electrician to join our operations and maintenance (O&M) program. This role requires a proactive individual with experience in solar and electrical O&M, as well as excellent reporting and communication skills. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, warranty repairs, and operational diagnostics on commercial and utility-scale PV and BESS systems. This position will also occasionally be expected to support the electrical department with new construction projects, which may require in and out-of-state travel.
- Work with the Service Manager to administer a comprehensive solar O&M and service program, following standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with OSHA, NFPA and other applicable workplace safety standards.
- Perform scheduled preventive and corrective maintenance on commercial solar PV and BESS systems in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate service records, documentation, logs and reports, ensuring compliance with NFPA-70B.
- Diagnose and resolve system issues including inverter faults, nuisance trips, communication problems, and string-level failures.
- Utilize common industry practices to analyze system health including megger testing, voltage readings, thermal imaging, IR curve tracing and performance testing.
- Replace or repair system components such as inverters, disconnects, modules, fuses and wiring.
- Collaborate with manufacturer and third-party engineering support when complex issues arise, creating case numbers and keeping proper documentation.
- Process and execute warranty claims with manufacturers for defective equipment. Perform RMA duties as required.
- Interact with customers and site personnel in a professional and courteous manner.
- Provide detailed technical summaries and field reports after service visits in accordance with company standards.
- Perform comprehensive site inspections and/or site surveys as needed.
- Maintain department inventory, tools and equipment.
- Occasionally, and on an as-needed basis, serve as a PV installer / electrician on new construction PV and BESS projects. Duties shall include installing conduit, pulling and terminating conductors, installing equipment and enclosures, performing system interconnections and service shutdowns, and other assigned.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a technician in solar O&M; specifically commercial 3-phase systems.
- Strong working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC)
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a solar system installer or electrician on 3-phase commercial or utility-scale systems.
- Experience energizing and de-energizing PV and BESS systems following NFPA 70E and other workplace safety requirements.
- Demonstrated technical expertise in photovoltaic and electrical systems, including troubleshooting methods and knowledge of various industry manufacturers.
- Proficiency with DAS monitoring system hardware and software platforms, with a fundamental understanding of industry standard hardware components.
- Proficiency with diagnostic equipment and relevant software tools.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry best practices for safety.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities, both written and verbal.
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and willingness to travel intermittently to job sites as needed, including periodic out-of-state travel in the southwest.
- Experience commissioning and programming commercial inverters.
- Experience with batteries, transformers, switchgear and other major system components.
- Experience with single axis tracker systems.
- Applicable NABCEP O&M certification.
- Current and valid NFPA 70E, OSHA 30, LOTO training certificates.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 50lbs.
- Qualified and prepared to work on energized or potentially energized electrical systems.
- Capability to work on ladders, scaffolds, and in confined spaces while installing or repairing electrical wiring and equipment.
This role can be physically demanding and frequently requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. This role involves frequent climbing, lifting and bending.
