Senior Data Architect - Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently seeking a Senior Data Architect to join the Information Management Technology (IMT) branch. The Senior Data Architect leads the design and delivery of scalable, secure, and business-aligned data architecture across multiple projects. In this strategic role, you will guide data architects and modelers, ensuring alignment with enterprise modeling standards and semantic consistency.
In this role you will collaborate with Solution Architects and Product Owners to translate business requirements into effective data solutions, while working with the Data Practice Leads to drive governance, standardization, integration and the evolution of enterprise architecture practices.
This is a blended role: part hands-on architecture and modeling, part mentorship and coordination, and part strategic alignment with the broader enterprise data ecosystem.
What your day-to-day will look like:•Lead data architecture efforts in collaboration with Product Owners and Solution Architects to deliver scalable, secure, high-performance solutions aligned with business and enterprise goals.
•Translate requirements into conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support both operational systems and analytics, ensuring alignment with the enterprise model.
•Advise Data and Solution Architects on architecture options to ensure consistency with application, infrastructure, and business needs.
•Design and implement performant, secure data access mechanisms (e.g., views, stored procedures, materialized views) for downstream APIs and services.
•Develop secure, governed data sharing strategies for internal and external data exchange.
•Conduct data migration assessments and create implementation plans for legacy modernization and cloud/data platform transitions.
•Align project data models with enterprise standards by working closely with the Principal/Enterprise Data Modeler to apply shared semantics, definitions, and boundaries.
•Collaborate with Data Architecture and Engineering leads to define and promote best practices for:
+ Data modeling, integration, naming conventions, and metadata management.
+ Performance tuning, security, availability, and resilience strategies.
+ Architecture pattern adoption and governance.
•Mentor Data Architects and Engineers, ensuring quality, reusability, and adherence to standards across projects.
•Maintain comprehensive architecture documentation, including models, mappings, lineage, and data flows for traceability and audit readiness.
•Ensure consistency and integrity across development, testing, and production environments.
•Design scalable, integrated data models that interface effectively with legacy and modern systems.
•Define and enforce standards for JSON schemas, versioning, and contracts across APIs, messaging (e.g., Kafka), and NoSQL stores.
•Collaborate with developers and architects to uphold data quality, validation, and automation best practices.
•Establish alignment between NoSQL, JSON, and SQL schemas, and governance processes for inter-agency data sharing.
What we’re looking for in you:
•Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related field.
•10 + years of advanced experience in data architecture and design for custom enterprise solutions.
•5+ years supporting Agile delivery with iterative, adaptive data modeling.
•Proven ability to translate complex business needs into scalable, stakeholder-friendly data models.
•Deep expertise in full-stack data architecture (conceptual, logical, physical).
•Strong SQL skills (DDL & DML); hands-on with Microsoft SQL Server and Azure Cosmos DB.
•Expert in IDERA ER/Studio for data modeling.
•Extensive experience with cloud-based data architectures and CI/CD pipelines.
•Proficient in hybrid data environments (relational + NoSQL/document stores).
•Skilled in distributed data modeling, eventual consistency, and cloud-native schema design.
•Strong background in metadata management, naming conventions, and domain standardization.
•Experience defining and enforcing enterprise-wide data standards and practices.
•Proficient with ETL/ELT, API-based sharing, and event-driven architectures.
•Experience supporting governance: lineage, data quality, MDM, and reference data management.
•Successful track record designing and delivering secure, scalable data sharing solutions.
•Familiarity with DevOps practices: code repo management, pull requests, automated deployments.
•Experience in regulated industries (e.g., oil & gas, government) is an asset.
•Effective leader and mentor with strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
•Highly organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities in fast-paced environments.
