Position Summary
Duke Energy seeks an experienced and motivated Senior Counsel to join its legal department, providing critical support in regulatory legal matters in North Carolina. The position offers an exciting opportunity for a mid-level attorney to develop expertise in the energy sector while contributing to Duke Energy’s strategic objectives. This position will play a vital role in supporting the legal and strategic needs of the business by representing Duke Energy in state regulatory proceedings, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, advancing the company’s strategic objectives, advising business units on a wide range of legal issues, and managing legal risks in a dynamic and evolving energy landscape.
Reporting directly to the Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Counsel will provide legal support for state regulatory proceedings, compliance obligations, and other legal matters impacting Duke Energy in North Carolina. This includes preparing regulatory filings, providing legal counsel, and representing the company in regulatory matters. The selected candidate will collaborate with internal teams and external counsel to mitigate legal risks, support company objectives, and achieve favorable outcomes in legal proceedings.
Responsibilities•Assist in managing regulatory proceedings before state regulatory agencies, including preparing and reviewing filings, briefs, comments, and testimony.
•Provide legal counsel and strategic advice to internal business partners regarding compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including those related to state energy regulation.
•Research and draft regulatory filings, including petitions, applications, pre-filed testimony, briefs and proposed orders; and responses to discovery in collaboration with various business unit subject matter experts.
•Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel to manage legal risks, ensure consistency in regulatory approaches, and support company objectives.
•Represent Duke Energy in regulatory proceedings, negotiations, and interactions with regulators, intervenors, and stakeholders.
•Supervise outside counsel, ensuring efficient and cost-effective legal representation
•Support the Deputy General Counsel in preparing materials and presentations for senior leadership, external stakeholders, and regulatory bodies
•Monitor and analyze legal and regulatory developments to assess potential impacts on the business and provide proactive legal advice.
Required/Basic Qualifications
•Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (JD) from an accredited law school
•In addition to JD, minimum of three (3) years of related experience
•Licensed to practice law in NC or eligible for comity
Preferred Qualifications
•Five (5) years minimum of experience practicing law
•Three (3) years of energy-related experience
•Membership in good standing with a state bar, preferably in North Carolina or eligible for comity in North Carolina.
•Experience representing clients in regulatory proceedings before state or federal agencies, such as utility commissions or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
•Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaborate across diverse teams.
•Sound judgment and decision-making skills
•Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills with a demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters.
•Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across diverse teams and with external stakeholders.
•Demonstrated skill in managing competing priorities, working independently, and meeting deadlines in dynamic settings.
•Strong ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
•Knowledge of energy laws and regulations, including rate cases, compliance filings, and regulatory reporting requirements.
•Experience working in a corporate legal department or law firm specializing in energy or utilities.
Working Conditions
•This position has a strong preference for location in Raleigh, NC but location in Charlotte, NC will be considered.
•Minimal travel required.
•The position operates in a hybrid work environment, requiring a combination of remote and in-office work.
