Senior Legal Counsel
Stelco is currently seeking an experienced senior legal counsel to join its head office team in Hamilton, Ontario. Reporting to the President and General Counsel, you will work closely with the Company’s senior leadership to provide high-level professional legal services to the organization, offering strategic guidance, practical and value-added legal advice and managing legal and regulatory matters. This role plays a critical role in areas including corporate/commercial, labour and employee relations, trade, environmental regulation, litigation and finance.
Role and Responsibilities
As senior legal counsel at Stelco, you will have the opportunity to work on challenging matters that have both national and international implications. You will benefit from direct mentorship by Stelco’s President and General Counsel while you expand the scope of your legal career with the opportunity for further advancement.
Your responsibilities will include:
•Provide business partners with day-to-day advice, counsel and support in all areas of law to further the interests of the business while protecting the company’s legal interests.
•Prepare and negotiate commercial agreements, review of sales and purchasing arrangements, advise and participate in the inception, implementation and management of special/significant projects.
•Manage strategically important matters requiring sophisticated legal knowledge on a variety of legal issues and present clear recommendations to ensure legal compliance and mitigation of legal risks.
•Proactively partner with business colleagues to pursue opportunities and support compliance with legislation and enhance company policies.
•Assist in managing external counsel and the Company’s interests in transactions and litigation matters, ensuring the efficient use of legal resources
•Stay current with legal developments, best practices and emerging legal risks and responsively assist business partners in implementing policies and procedures.
•In addition to your core responsibilities, you will lead cross-functional legal initiatives and provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on complex legal matters.
Who You Are
The ideal candidate will be a passionate, motivated, driven individual with a proven ability to get the job done. Underlying qualifications and experience include:
•JD/LLB with a minimum of 10 years’ post-call experience in general corporate/commercial matters, mergers & acquisitions and labour & employment.
•Be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
•Excellent skills in drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.
•In-house experience in manufacturing, mining or heavy industry preferred.
•Superior personal and professional integrity with ability to manage multiple large-scale projects.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to build cooperative relationships, with a focus on delivery of efficient and practical advice are essential to the role.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple, conflicting priorities while managing a substantial workload and internal client expectations are also critical to this role.
