Position Summary:
The Scrap Metal Recycling Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment to process, move, and load scrap metal materials. This role ensures efficient yard operations by properly handling both ferrous and non-ferrous materials, maintaining equipment, and supporting the team in meeting production and safety goals.
Key Responsibilities:
•Safely operate mobile and stationary equipment such as:
•Excavators with scrap grapple or magnet attachments
•Wheel loaders, forklifts, skid steers, and material handlers
•Shears, balers, crushers, and shredders
•Load and unload trucks with scrap materials accurately and safely.
•Feed equipment with scrap to process according to operational needs.
•Yard Maintenance & Organization:
•Maintain organized scrap piles by material type and processing status.
•Keep loading zones, equipment paths, and workspaces clean and safe.
•Assist with site preparation, grading, or cleanup as needed.
•Equipment Care & Safety:
•Perform daily pre- and post-operation inspections of equipment.
•Report any mechanical issues to supervisor or maintenance immediately.
•Follow all OSHA, company, and manufacturer safety procedures.
•Use proper PPE at all times and contribute to a safety-first culture.
•Assist with offloading customer scrap when needed.
•Help Non-Ferrous and Scale House teams during high-traffic times.
•Participate in training and team meetings as required.
Qualifications:
•High school diploma or GED preferred.
•2+ years of heavy equipment operation experience, preferably in scrap, construction, or recycling.
•Must be familiar with basic material identification (ferrous vs. non-ferrous).
•Valid driver's license; equipment certification or CDL is a plus.
•Must be physically able to lift 50+ lbs and work in all outdoor conditions.
•Strong attention to safety, situational awareness, and communication skills.
