Job Description
American Alloy Steel, Inc. is seeking a motivated Sales and Use Tax / General Ledger Accountant to join our Corporate Accounting team in Houston, TX. This dynamic role supports both tax compliance and general ledger operations under minimal supervision. The ideal candidate is a proactive team player, detail oriented, has strong problem solving & communication skills, able to manage deadlines and has a desire to advance within the accounting field.
Key Responsibilities:
Sales and Use Tax Compliance & Vendor Documentation
•Prepare and reconcile U.S. Sales/Use Tax returns and Canadian GST/HST/QST returns.
•Organize and file all sales/use tax returns and associated payments.
•Verify Canadian GST/QST vendor registrations.
•Manage the collection, input, and organization of customer sale tax exemption certificates.
•Manage the collection, input, and organization of vendor Form W-9 records.
•Preparation and distribution of annual Form 1099s.
•Assist in preparing/filing business license renewals.
•Assist with audits through document preparation and inquiry responses.
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
•Prepare and post journal entries related to various accounts, including cash, fixed assets, accruals, and prepayments.
•Reconcile general ledger accounts ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financial data.
•Assist in month-end and year-end closing processes including financial statement analysis. Meet key deadlines to achieve month-end close deadlines
•Ensure adherence to US GAAP and company accounting policies.
•Support internal and external audits through document preparation and inquiry responses.
•Participate in financial and variance analysis to identify trends and resolve discrepancies.
•Collaborate cross-functionally with others within the department and other departments and support special projects as needed.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred, but not required.
•2–3 years in a general ledger accounting or analytical accounting role required.
•1+ year experience in tax compliance preferred (Sales and Use Tax support experience a plus).
Technical Skills:
•Moderate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word (e.g., mail merge, pivot tables, vlookups).
•Familiarity with accounting software systems; willingness to learn proprietary systems.
