Researcher – Steelmaking
(Permanent Position)
The ArcelorMittal Global R&D Hamilton (GRDH) research lab has a staff of ~90 people and a wide range of analytical and process simulation equipment. The Hamilton lab is part of a larger Global R&D organization with ~1500 researchers in several geographic locations across Europe and the Americas. The R&D lab provides technical leadership in process improvement and new product development that supports both the Dofasco plant and broader global applications
Primary Function:
As a Researcher in the Primary Process group, your main role will be to develop research projects related to innovations in the steelmaking process. The goals of these projects are to advance our understanding and application of new technologies in the Electric Arc Furnace, secondary refining and conventional steelmaking processes. You will work alongside a team of researchers, engineers, technologists, trades, and manufacturing personnel on these projects.
Main Responsibilities:
•Conducts multiple technical research projects and investigations in his/her specialized field.
•Develop an awareness of emerging processes / product technologies relevant to primary steelmaking processes
•Lead the implementation and tracking of value creation for your projects
•Develop and utilize an internal network within ArcelorMittal to enable technical projects
•Work with external stakeholders in academia, consortiums and partnerships to advance technical innovations and enable knowledge building.
Education and Work Experience:
•Master’s or PhD. degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical, Chemical, or other relevant field of Engineering or Science. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree with preferably 2+ years of relevant experience.
Qualifications
•Able to work independently or collaboratively in a team environment
•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and resolve issues
•Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills for effective deployment of R&D across a range of groups
•Strong facilitation skills
•Ability to multi-task with strong time management skills
•Knowledge in statistical analysis techniques and statistical software tools (R, Excel etc.)
•Previous experience in a lab environment
•Knowledge of steelmaking processing routes
•Ability to travel internationally
Work Environment:
•Candidates are expected to work across office, plant and laboratory environments, with some work in a heavy manufacturing environment.
•The manufacturing plant environment includes exposure to dust, chemicals, temperature changes, noise and large industrial equipment.
•Potential for travel as required.
Hours of Work:
•Normal hours of work for this position is “days”, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required to meet project deadlines or resulting from periods of peak workload.
