ROLE:
Surerus Murphy Joint Venture is seeking a Project/Lead Engineer to support oil & gas facility construction projects in Northern Alberta, Northern BC, and Southern BC.
Reporting to the Project Manager, Project/Lead Engineers form a part of the project’s Technical Services Group, consisting of Engineers, Drafters, Surveyors, GIS Technicians, and Drone Operators all supporting the construction of world class facility and pipeline infrastructure.
Project/Lead Engineers work for the Technical Services Group, Construction personnel and the Project Management team to develop and execute practical, safe, efficient, and novel construction work plans and processes, while ensuring all works adhere to applicable standards, specifications, and regulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical oversight during bidding, planning, and execution of construction projects.
- Understand and apply client standards and specifications, internal company standards, industry codes and standards, as well as regulatory requirements relative to the scope of SMJV’s construction projects.
- Review and understand relevant project specific documentation to determine the deliverables required prior to and during the works.
- Coordinate with Construction personnel to identify deficiencies or contradictions in project documentation or work plans.
- Where deficiencies or contradictions are identified, submit RFI’s in accordance with established project processes.
- Coordinate with Construction personnel to ensure that project documentation is clearly understood and applied in a safe and efficient manner.
- Conduct field reviews of engineering work products to ensure technical accuracy and constructability.
- Assist in the completion of Engineering Risk Assessments, and development of Job Hazard Assessments for work products developed to promote best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the HSE department.
- Exhibit proficiency in the utilization of supporting software packages such as MS Project, P6, MS Word & Excel, Civil 3D.
- Prepare accurate and concise documents illustrating situational project needs for communication both internally and to clients.
- Generate detailed summaries of technical progress or work scopes for communication to the project CMT.
- Able to utilize client provided CAD drawings for additional clarification and/or construction guidance such as dimensioning, installation constraints, or general illustration of work requirements.
- Capable of quickly illustrating field level construction issue resolutions for communication to client and SMJV crews.
- Participate in the preparation of construction schedules and milestones and monitor the projects progress against the established project schedule.
- Assist Project Management team as required to support the success of the project.
- Review of subcontractor packages to ensure compliance with technical requirements and engineering best practices.
- Coordinate with subcontractors to ensure third party deliverables are developed to the same, or higher, standard as SMJV developed deliverables.
- Support Project Management and Quality Assurance to ensure technical project data and records are up to date and accurate.
- Coordinate with Construction personnel and the Project Management team to assess the impact on work requirements, including production, cost, schedule and safety.
- Ensure that all changes in standards, specifications, and regulations are captured, reviewed, and briefed out to all project staff who have safety critical involvement.
- Where third party engineering deliverables are required, working with Project Management to develop RFP packages, including scope of work, schedule requirements, and provision of all applicable technical documentation.
- Coordinate with subcontractors to ensure that field reviews of third-party engineering deliverables are conducted in accordance with engineering best practices.
- General Requirements
- Take a personal interest in identifying, coaching, and developing junior engineering staff.
- Ensure junior Engineering and/or Technologist staff are engaged in project activities and are utilized in supporting project activities such as RFI preparation and communication, subcontractor RFI management, technical documentation communication to the CMT and crews.
- Build effective relationships with customers, design team, subcontractors, and suppliers, that reflect and support company core values and meet or exceed the customer’s expectations.
- Coordinate with the Engineering and GIS department to ensure knowledge transfer and maintenance of technical best practices.
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- Member in good standing with APEGA or EGBC, and the ability to obtain membership in alternate jurisdictions.
- A minimum of 5 years experience, within the Oil & Gas or other relevant industry, in project engineering, design, construction, or other relevant roles is required.
- Experience in facility design working within an EPCM work environment is considered an asset.
- Experience in facility civil works, foundations, structural and/or piping is considered an asset.
- Experience in hydrotest planning and execution is considered and asset.
- Self starter, able to identify priorities, establish critical paths, and act on them in a timely manner.
- Able to identify project issues or concerns with minimal guidance or explanation.
- Understanding of facility process piping & equipment, general process flow design, general electrical and instrumentation design.
- Effective meeting management skills. Candidate should have experience preparing concise agendas and running productive meetings.
- Familiarity with relevant construction codes and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to read and understand relevant construction documents including contracts, drawings, specifications, subcontracts.
- Proven leadership skills in contract management, technical oversight, and resource management.
- Proven ability to meet project deadlines.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position is field based approximately 60% of year and often works within remote project locations. Travel and/or living in temporary accommodations is required. Must be able to work away from home for extended periods of time. Typical project shift cycle would be 15 days on and 6 days off (15 and 6) or a 6 and 1. Field workday would be a 12-hr day. When office based (Calgary or Spruce Grove) the working hours are 40 hours per week over 5 days. Surerus Murphy has a flexible working policy when working from the corporate office of 8 days per month.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Project/Lead Engineer reports to the Project Lead Engineer or Project Manager. The position supports project management and construction teams.
