The Project Accountant is responsible for the full-cycle accounting and financial reporting of an assigned division. This role supports project managers and operational leadership by ensuring accurate financial records, timely reporting, proper job cost tracking, compliance with internal controls, and strong financial insight. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, project-based environment.
- Prepare and maintain general ledger entries, reconciliations, accruals, and month-end close activities.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable related to the assigned division.
- Reconcile bank accounts, inventory and various other balance sheet accounts.
- Monitor job costs, labor, equipment usage, subcontractor invoices, and material charges.
- Review and validate project billings, with a focus on time and materials.
- Monitor project costs to job quotes to monitor for completeness and accuracy.
- Prepare monthly divisional financial statements, variance analyses, and management reporting packages.
- Track KPIs and operational metrics relevant to the division.
- Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, GAAP, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with internal and external audit requests.
- Serve as the primary accounting point of contact for the assigned division.
- Provide financial support and guidance to field management, operations, and administrative staff.
- Contribute to process improvements and technology upgrades to drive efficiency.
- Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize in a fast-moving environment.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with project teams.
- Proficient in Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data analysis functions).
- Strong problem-solving abilities and initiative to identify and resolve issues proactively.
- Ability to understand field operations and translate them into accurate financial reporting.

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 3-5 years of accounting experience; construction or project-based accounting strongly preferred.
- 1-2 years of experience with job cost accounting systems, Sage Intacct preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and month-end close processes.
- Experience with construction billing methods.
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computer and peripherals
- Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
- Motion: Repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding, and use of mouse; occasional reaching
- Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying (15+ pounds)- Environment: Possible districtwide travel or statewide travel with potential exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, noise, vibration, and chemical and electrical hazards
- Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, sudden shifting priorities, and ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
