Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Payroll & Benefits Specialist plays a critical role within the Human Resources team and is accountable for the accurate and timely processing of full cycle salary and hourly payroll as well as the administration and support for employees on the benefits programs for North West Redwater Partnership (NWR).
As an integral part of the HR team, this role is a stand-alone focal for complex pay policy applications and health and wellness related benefits. The Payroll and Benefits Specialist will be expected to build expertise in NWR’s pay policy administration, health and wellness benefits, and employee support, while contributing to other key HR and organizational initiatives. The Payroll & Benefits Specialist will also be accountable for activities in support of the HR team goals and projects, including leading compliance meetings, and spearheading special HR projects.
Responsibilities:
•Full cycle payroll management for hourly and salary compensated staff, including accurate and timely processing of pay, accounting entries, taxable benefits, premiums, and overtime record-keeping in alignment with best practices, pay policies and government regulations;
•Accurately apply payroll changes related to leave of absence, new hires, departures, and deductions, maintaining compliance with all internal policies and external regulations;
•Prepare and submit detailed activity reports for payroll transactions, cost allocations, and changes, addressing discrepancies and ensuring transparency;
•Act as a primary resource to NWR staff and leaders on payroll processes and practices recommending enhancements as required;
•Administer health, dental, and savings plans benefits in alignment with NWR’s policies and practices;
•Monitor insurance, health, dental, disability, and savings plans proactively to ensure compliance with legislative and procedural requirements.
•Coordinate and participate in the annual renewal and review of NWR benefits and savings plans, based on benchmarking and cost-value analysis in consultation with the HR Manager;
•Develop and deliver onsite employee information sessions and materials promoting health, wellness, dental, and savings plans;
•Act as a champion for NWR’s health and wellness initiatives, driving employee engagement and program participation;
•Provide guidance to staff and leaders on policies related to benefits and savings plans, recommending changes where appropriate;
•Participate in HR initiatives, including system upgrades (e.g., HRIS), correspondence preparation, and vacation coverage;
•Lead special projects such as compliance meetings, campaigns, and other HR team objectives;
•Continuously refine processes and systems to enhance payroll and benefits administration efficiency and effectiveness.
Requirements:
•This is a full-time onsite (In office) role located at NWR’s sturgeon refinery site;
•Completed post-secondary education in Finance/ Accounting/ Payroll Administration or equivalent considered an asset;
•Payroll designation is considered and asset;
•5+ years direct experience with payroll & benefits processing, compliance and administration;
•Must have a high attention to detail, be a critical thinker and be committed to continuous improvement;
•Proficient in using technology-based systems, actively looks for ways to improve processes and systems utilizing technology/tools effectively;
•Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
•Must be a self-starter and driven individual who has a strong sense of personal ownership, ability to work independently and responsibility for completion of objectives on time;
•Understands, create and maintains a visible commitment to safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies and high performing culture to drive results;
