About This Job

Ohio's Electric Cooperatives is looking for an Operations and Maintenance Plant Technician at our Mone Plant in Convoy, OH. The O&M Plant Technician will monitor and inspect all plant equipment including gas turbines, generators, boilers, transformers, pumps, switchyard, and related auxiliary equipment. Operates local controls and devices for proper plant operation. Performs moderately skilled work in the checking, inspecting, repair, maintenance, installation and construction of plant equipment and structures. Performs moderately technical and skilled work in conjunction with electrical systems, analysis, detection and repair of single loop control systems, electronic devices, communication systems and instruments such as meters, gauges, and regulators. Performs technical work in oil analyses, industrial hygiene and environmental testing and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment. Assists others in conducting tests, surveys and layout work. Communicates and coordinates activities affecting the safe and efficient operation of the plant in an often distracting and multitasking environment. Demonstrates the ability to work with others at all levels.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrates ethical behavior and shows strong leadership in safe and healthy work behaviors and environmental stewardship. Adheres to proper operating practices and procedures designed to prevent injury, illness, and environmental noncompliance. Observes and complies with governmental and company environmental, safety and health regulations. Demonstrates a strong work ethic, integrity, and willingness to work and communicate effectively with all employees and contractors. Maintains and ensures safe working conditions (including housekeeping activities), use of proper tools and equipment, and protective clothing and devices.
Performs equipment checks to ensure safe and efficient operations during the start-up, operation and shutdown of turbines, generators, boilers, pumps, exciters, transformers, switchyard, and auxiliary equipment. Operates valves, pumps, electrical disconnects, breakers and controls, etc. from remote locations as needed. Takes appropriate actions in the event of abnormal plant equipment conditions. Monitors field controlling, indicating, and recording devices, and compares results with established standards and makes adjustments as required based on operating conditions. Enters and reviews data in the logbook.
Monitors and responds to alarms and unusual conditions to ensure proper operation of equipment within established standards. Reports irregular and abnormal operating conditions to plant supervision.
Operates hoists, fork-lift trucks, small tractors, aerial lifts, scissor lifts, mobile cranes, and automotive equipment. Inspects scaffold and rigging in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Assists in monitoring, inspecting, installing, removing, testing, adjusting, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical, electronic, instrumentation and plant controls systems and components. Conducts simple electrical system interlock and circuit breaker trip checks to determine proper operational performance. Performs simple control system monitoring using a computer interface terminal. Assists in using elementary, schematic, wiring and control diagrams to locate, troubleshoot and repair control systems involving electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic components. Uses electrical and instrumentation test equipment to troubleshoot and calibrate plant equipment. Operates, maintains, and repairs medium and low voltage circuit breakers and associated equipment.
Performs minor mechanical maintenance work including, dismantling, rebuilding, adjusting, aligning, packing, and cleaning equipment. Assists with repair of rotating equipment, valves, actuators, piping, etc. Operates welding machine and gas torch to cut, heat, braze and make tack and temporary welds, etc. Assists licensed contractors to perform minor maintenance work on HVAC and plumbing systems. Properly uses machine shop equipment, power, and hand tools. Performs rough carpentry work and limited masonry work. Loads, unloads, moves, and handles materials, supplies and equipment.
Operates machine shop and portable machine equipment such as shapers, drill presses and similar machining equipment to produce accurate measurements on all shapes. Masters the ability to use appropriate tools and equipment. Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
Performs predictive and preventive maintenance work by inspecting, monitoring, lubricating, troubleshooting, and testing plant equipment to determine conditions such as wear, corrosion and deposits. Performs inspections and corrective maintenance activities on plant equipment and components. Conducts tests and inspections to ensure proper operation of the plant.
Uses work management systems to initiate, retrieve and update work orders, material requests, PMs, and time entry, etc. Uses various computer applications and software programs to extract data, analyze trends and report status to ensure plant reliability and efficiency, produce, revise, and maintain records, technical reports, procedures, and plant drawings as required. Conducts investigations and makes calculations utilizing computer applications and programs, technical manuals, and procedures, etc. to ensure reliable and efficient plant operations. Assists in preparing required drawings/layouts on projects such as new construction, revisions to existing facilities and all types of power plant equipment.
Operates, monitors, maintains, and calibrates environmental and industrial hygiene equipment (such as emissions monitoring equipment, noise, and gas detection devices, etc.) in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Collects and analyzes air, gas, water, and chemicals samples.
Directs and assists the work of assigned employees and contractors as required. Conducts JSA briefings with plant employees and contractors. Utilizes JHAs, MSDSs, etc. and follows established plant and company guidelines in job briefings. Works under the general direction of other O&M Plant Technicians (Senior and/or Principle level), as well as plant supervision.
Isolates plant equipment and removes stored energy in accordance with the company Clearance Permit Procedure. Obtains clearance permits and ensures that equipment is properly cleared and tagged before work begins in accordance with the Clearance Permit Procedure. Obtains hot work and confined space permits in accordance with company policies to complete work safely. Monitors plant equipment/personnel and takes appropriate action in areas that hot work and confined space permits have been issued.
Responds to emergency situations. Assists in maintaining plant security. Maintains proficiency in incipient firefighting, first aid and CPR. Understands and adheres to all SPCC, FRP and emergency response programs.
Performs work as identified by other O&M Plant Technicians (Senior and/or Principal level) and plant supervision. Reports and documents safety and health near misses, incidents, accidents, and environmental hazards in accordance with company policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations and company policies, procedures, standards, and specifications.
Attends and actively participates in environmental, safety and health, technical, business and leadership training and meetings. Shares knowledge and trains/mentors other employees. Reports and corrects any unsafe actions, conditions or near misses. Responsible for exercising maximum care and good judgment in preventing accidents and protecting the safety and health of fellow workers.
Prepares sketches and takes notes for layouts/installation of equipment, new construction, and remodeling of buildings. Provides information to other O&M Technicians and supervision.
Manages the site inventory as directed by other O&M Technicians (Senior and/or Principal level) and plant supervision. Adds/deletes inventory items and completes audits as required.
Manages the site environmental program (all site environmental activities and tasks) as directed by supervision. Completes assigned regulatory tasks and procedures. Assists other O&M Technicians (Senior and/or Principal level) and corporate environmental personnel in preparation of environmental reports.
Manages the site safety program as directed by supervision. Completes assigned tasks and writes, develops and revises safety policies/procedures as requested. Assists supervision, other O&M Technicians and corporate safety personnel in the development and management of new safety policies/procedures.
Helps manage the site NERC program. Completes assigned tasks as directed by supervision. Assists supervision, other O&M Technicians, and corporate NERC personnel in completing audit tasks & reviewing NERC required procedures/activities.
Assists supervision in reviewing & approving site invoices as requested.
Without direct supervision, operates the gas turbine and all plant auxiliaries as required. Must be proficient at the following operations duties: unit startup, operations, and shutdown of equipment, systems, and the plant in accordance with approved plant procedures. Operates the units within environmental requirements and in accordance with safe operating procedures.
Makes regular inspection rounds of plant electrical, instrumentation and mechanical equipment during unit operations to inspect plant equipment for faulty operations or conditions that require adjustment and/or repairs. Reports findings to the control room and/or supervision. Makes necessary corrections, adjustments and/or repairs to plant systems and equipment.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Must have a two (2) year Associate Degree in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Power Plant Technologies, Industrial Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience and/or education.

Licenses and Certifications: Must possess the appropriate State driver's license. Must obtain and maintain all necessary certifications and licenses as required.


Experience:

The successful candidate should have twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months of power plant experience in operations, maintenance, electrical, instrumentation and controls in gas turbine systems.
Must have performed the duties of, and maintained all the qualifications, certifications and licenses of Operation and Maintenance Plant Technician Associate, or the equivalent.
Must be able to pass a written examination and/or complete job demonstrations as determined by the company. Successful completion of the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) and the Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) tests are required for this position. A review of Employment Testing Information, TestTaking Tips, together with the POSS and MASS Practice Tests may be helpful.


Knowledge:

Must possess a basic knowledge of applicable operating and maintenance instructions and procedures.
Must understand the care and attention required for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
Must have a basic knowledge of the principles of operating the plant safely and efficiently during start-up, normal operation and shutdown of boilers, turbines, generators, pumps, exciters, transformers, etc. and their auxiliaries and accessories.
Must have basic knowledge and skills needed to analyze, interpret, calibrate, and adjust plant instruments and controls, and be capable of detecting and making repairs to simple control systems and understand protective systems.
Must have basic knowledge of procedures, tests, etc. to perform chemical analysis, industrial hygiene evaluations and environmental sampling.
Must have a basic knowledge of minor plant maintenance, materials, practices, tools, rigging, scaffolding, and blocking involved in the work.
Must have a basic knowledge of the heat balance systems and the effect of unbalances on operating efficiency.


Abilities & Skills Required:

Must be able to perform duties in accordance with company rules, safety policies and procedures, and be able to interpret OSHA and environmental laws, regulations, guidelines and polices.
Must be able to able to perform required work physically and mentally in an often distracting and multitasking plant environment.
Must have the skills and knowledge of plant operations outside of the control room and be able to operate the plant without direct supervision.
Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints and specifications.
Must be willing to assist with maintenance and operational activities at other facilities when needed.
Must have the ability to direct and coordinate the work of employees and contractors.
Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills.
Possesses the ability to communicate effectively with peers and plant management. A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.


Physical Requirements:

Frequent: Sedentary work, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods, close visual acuity, work with a computer, keyboard, communicate with others. Periodic: Lift objects of nominal weight


Work Environment

Must be available for overtime and on-call duties as outlined by plant supervision.
