SUMMARY: Perform heavy manual labor and semi-skilled work in industrial maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities operated by Columbus Water Works. Duties include carrying out maintenance on all sewage lift stations, water booster stations, water tanks, Water Plant, Waste Water Plant and CSO’s to include cleaning, repairing and maintenance. Assist Maintenance Technicians in performing preventive, predictive, regular and unscheduled maintenance and repair on all mechanical equipment at facilities. Water tank maintenance requires climbing to the height of 165’ above ground and sewage lift stations maintenance requires working 90’ underground. Also assist Technicians to assemble, install and maintain piping systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; assists Technician to dismantle, clean, lubricate, repair / replaces shafts, bearing, gears, impellers, bar screens and other parts of pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and other equipment. Performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Perform semi-skilled work in the maintenance of water and wastewater equipment as directed and scheduled by the Managed Maintenance Department and Computerized Maintenance Management System
- As part of a maintenance work group, the Apprentice assists in responding to equipment failures and performing repair on equipment
- Assist Mechanics in dismantling equipment to gain access and to remove and replace defective parts
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance on functional parts of devices and equipment
- Assist Mechanics to assemble, install and maintain piping systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
- Assist Mechanics to dismantle, clean, lubricate, repair and replace shafts, bearings, gears, impellers, and other parts of pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and other equipment
- Communicate with his supervisor for the requisition for parts needed to perform job duties
- Safely uses equipment and tools to perform maintenance on equipment, including but not limited to drill press, grinders, hand tools, power tools, welders, cutting torches, saws, etc.
- Assist Mechanics to inspect and test pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, air compressors, dewatering equipment, sludge removal equipment, tanks, mixers, trash screens, vacuum systems, oil accumulator systems, chemical feed equipment, odor control systems, filters, HVAC systems and assist work groups to carry out job duties associated with the generation of work orders in the CMMS.
- Must be able to work in lift stations up to 90’ below ground level using ladder or safety harness to perform required maintenance
- Must be able to climb water tanks up to 165’ high
- Required to be in the monthly “On Call” rotation
- Perform job duties associated with the generation of work orders in MAXIMO.
- Enter time, materials, and pertinent data into MAXIMO as work orders are completed

High School Diploma or GED required. Technical school training courses in mechanical trades and specialized training in relation to water and wastewater treatment equipment maintenance preferred. At least one year of experience in industrial plant maintenance or related field required. Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. Previous experience assembling, installing, and/or maintaining piping systems preferred. Basic mechanical knowledge is required.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places, confined spaces, in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee regularly works with and around chemicals to include chlorine and fluoride, associated tanks, piping and chemical feed systems commonly found in the water and wastewater industry.
